    1. Because we interpret the world in roughly similar ways, weare able to build up a shared culture of meanings and thus construct a social world which we inhabittogether.

his quote really stood out to me because it explains how culture is built through shared meaning. It’s not just individual thoughts that matter, representation works because groups of people agree (consciously or not) on what signs and concepts mean. This made me think about how different cultural groups may interpret the same image or word in totally different ways.

    2. Representation is the productionof the meaning of the concepts in our minds through language. It is the link between concepts andlanguage which enables us to refer to either the ‘real’ world of objects, people or events, or indeedto imaginary worlds of fictional objects, people and events.

This line shows how powerful language is, it’s not just a tool for describing, but a bridge between thought and the world. I hadn’t realized how deeply we rely on shared language to make sense of everything, even fictional things.

    3. Meaning depends on the relation-ship between things in the world – people, objects and events, real or fictional – and the conceptualsystem, which can operate as mental representations of them.

This helped me understand that meaning doesn’t come from objects themselves, but from the concepts in our minds that we associate with them. Representation starts with how we organize and interpret the world mentally before we use language to communicate it.

    1. Creating design theory is about building one’s own community,

I liked how this turned theory into something social. I used to think design theory was abstract or boring, but this made it feel more like a way to connect with other designers, past and present, who are also trying to make sense of the world.

    2. Design is visible everywhere, yet it is also invisible—unnoticed andunacknowledged

This line stood out to me because it’s so true. We see design all day but rarely stop to notice or credit it. As a design student, this made me reflect on how much of our work might go unrecognized, even though it’s a huge part of everyday life.

    3. Theory is all about the question “why?”

I never thought about how much of my design education has been focused on “how” to do things. This line helped me realize that asking “why” we design something gives it more meaning and direction. It’s not just about using tools it’s also about purpose.
