    1. A nation that erects a monument of shame for the evils of its history in its most prominent space is a nation that is not afraid to confront its own failures.

This sentence really interests me because it almost reads as a callout to other countries with bad histories, including the US. It's almost as if Nieman here is telling the others to step it up. While I don't agree with an atonement monument being built just to stop backlash or to keep up with other countries, I feel like nations need to acknowledge that some of their past actions really did have negative consequences that hurt a lot of people.

    2. History was written by history's winners, and its losers merited no immortal attention.

Question: Why then do you think there are so many statues honoring Confederate leaders, seeing as the South is generally acknowledged as the losers of the Civil War? Would we have benefited as a nation if we did not honor the Confederacy in the same way that Germans don't honor the Third Reich?

    1. we want to call German cultural studies is ;~u~r~is~ipli,_1arity, as opposed to what has been most in evidence to date: mul-idisciplmanty.

What would constitute multidisciplinary German cultural studies versus interdisciplinary German cultural studies? How can we as students supports this transition from multidisciplinarity to interdisciplinarity?

    2. And should we be concerned that the culture that comes after it is still fundamentally sexist and probably racist?

This sentence stands out to me for two reasons. The first is the use of the word probably in the phrase "probably racist" because I believe that many academic cultures have been proven to be racist, or based in racist ideals. The second reason is that this sentence calls out the doubters of the flaws of academica, because we should be concerned about these flaws.
