    1. Or we might even conceive of rhetoric as, in a certain way, disengaging from the entire problematic of "fields," disconnecting from both"interdisciplinary studies" and work in the "rhetoric of x" genre (indicating, perhaps, an ontological rhetoric).

I'm reminded of Lanham's "rhetorical paideia" here. Is this course of action an attempt to put the toothpaste back in the tube?

    2. idiom

I feel like I'm missing something here. Muckelbauer uses the term "idiom" multiple times in this short essay, once alongside "situation." What work, specifically, is this word doing?

wut journal was this in? Enculturation? Doesn't sound very scholarly.

    1. alembicated

an old (18th c.) chemistry word that means "distilled."

      Pretty neat.

    2. ...

The quote from Quintilian doesn't seem to be the most damning evidence one could find. He also says "I affirm that no man can be an orator unless he is a good man."

see pg. 357 on this pdf

    3. Plato's solu-tion, and Isocraces'

This seems like a pretty good example of what Dr. Rivers mentioned in class, where the two disagree about something, but agree to the same rules or paradigm.

    4. The problem itself, which I shall call the "Q" question in honor of its most famous nonanswerer

Well I didn't make it very far in my Q source theory.

    5. good man as well as a good orator

I remember hearing (but can't confirm it) that Aristotle taught rhetoric last, after he was sure his students would be "good men." If he had doubts, he wouldn't teach them rhetoric, because he didn't want them corrupting the polis. Again, I can't confirm that, but it sounds pretty ancient Greek to me.

    6. What are we trying to protect? The old technology itself or what it carries for us, tkJes to us

Yes, we have to ask these questions, and others, including "What do we fear? Why? Who has sponsored this change? Who profits from it? Who is harmed?"

    7. "Q"

I'm going to read this "Q" as a reference to source Q, a supposed source of the Synoptics, until I can't anymore.

    8. Somebody respond to this, please.

    1. Q

The Q is from Quintilian, I think. I'm really just testing my usage of Hypothesis here.
