    1. Salinas, whose parents are Mexican, remembers being on the other side. A Latina teacher hung Mexican and American flags in his fourth-grade classroom, not far from where he teaches today. “That just spoke to me as a kid,” he said.

When I imagine how I would set up my classroom, this detail Mr. Salinas remembers about a former classroom is what I'm aiming for. I want to decor and environment to speak to every student that walks in that door. I think it would be fun to leave an area for students to add decor that represents them also. The first week of school, we could do a "get to know me" activity and create a quick bio that will hang in the hallway for the first couple weeks of school for every to see or even until the first PTC so parents can also read the bios. Basically, I want a classroom that students want to come, feel comfortable, and excited to learn.

    1. It’s important to understand – just because we have don’t have certain kinds of privileges, it doesn’t mean that we don’t benefit from other kinds of privileges.

I see the privilege discussion arise on Facebook quite often among a particular group of my friends. A heated argument ensues when someone disagrees with white privilege existing. Specifically, a couple who has a strong Irish background. They always deny white privilege then immediately give us a history lesson on how Irish immigrants were treated in the past. They are good people but they just refuse to admit they have certain privileges other don't. I grew up poor, under developed, in an abusive home then parents divorced and I always envied those “rich kids” on the hill. The kids that would come to school with brand new clothes, brag about how many Christmas gifts they received, or they got exactly what they asked for on their birthday. As I grew older, I slowly noticed, my privileges that others didn’t have (we didn’t use that terminology though). A roof over our head, government provided groceries, free school lunch, and used clothing are all privileges not everyone has.<br> I believe an attribute that will help you inventory your privileges is gratitude. Just be thankful for what you do have, be appreciative and return the kindness with compassion and understanding to those less fortunate than you. Also, just except you have certain privileges others don’t and be an advocate for a better, all inclusive, world.
