41 non-related patients with retinal capillary hemangioma presenting in the Benjamin Franklin University Eye Clinic between 1988 to 1999 Germany were evaluated for the presence of other VHL lesions. VHL disease was diagnosed in 33 patients based on the presence of other severe VHL lesions (spinal hemangioblastoma, cerebellar hemangioblastoma, renal cysts, pancreatic cyst, renal carcinoma, and pheochromocytoma), molecular genetic testing, and/or family history. VHL germline mutations were identified in 27 out of 29 VHL families screened with molecular genetics. Blood samples were genetically tested using PCR-SSCP sequencing. One patient with VHL-related retinal angiomatosis was found to have germline splicing (c.463+3A>G) mutation in the VHL gene. 1 other affected relative was evaluated and found to have the variant but no phenotypes were provided. This variant was reported as c.676+3A>G (AF010238.1) and mapped to c.463+3A>G (NM_000551.3).
