How should we treat ownership in a world of non-rivalry? Do we need a radically permissive approach to intellectual property? And what about Digitalland’s territory? Should parts of the territory be classed as a digital commons, open to anyone? Should we, for example, treat the data we generate when we live and work in digital spaces as a public good, open for entrepreneurs and researchers to use? Could those rules of interoperability and open data amount to a digital right to roam, so that we can move more freely across Digitalland? We need to answer these questions in a way that is unconstrained by the old paradigms of Physicalland.
This is an argument in favour of what we've been calling, at Open Future, the Public Data Commons.
