That is a misleading statement. The latest version is where the
masterbranch points, isn't it?So a channel points to a Nixpkgs commit (on a branch named after the channel) where all packages inside are deemed stable, and all packages are built to have available binary substitutes by a (hydra) build farm.

A Nix channel is just a URL that points to a place that contains a set of Nix expressions and a manifest.
