Whether it is a one-time trail-maintenance outing in the rain, a weekly tutoring commitment or an organizational role in rallying classmates to pitch in, volunteering can help teens gain a sense of responsibility, feel more connected to their communities and prepare for the future. And the unexpected rewards of discovering a new interest, or feeling as though they’ve made a difference, can last a lifetime.

i think the central idea can be: you should try to volunteer even if you don't want to because it really can impact your live

    3. Volunteering is especially beneficial to low-income teens. According to a 2007 federal study, disadvantaged teens who volunteer feel empowered, and are more likely to become politically engaged and to believe they will graduate from college and make a difference in their communities.

i think some people don't know how much volunteering can impact their lives until they actually try it

    4. Garfield’s head counselor, Ken Courtney, advises students to pick an area of personal interest, such as the outdoors, for which they might enjoy volunteering, or to choose a possible future career interest, such as medicine or working with children. Serving in that area is a way to explore it and gain experience and skills that might help secure a job in the future, he says.

i think its super important to volunteer for something that you actually care about and want to help out with, otherwise if you don't like what you are volunteering about, then you wont put a lot of love into it

    1. The First Lady is asking schools to do their part by providing nutritious meals and strong P.E. programs to their students—important goals, given that obesity can cause serious physical and mental health issues and reduce academic achievement among kids.

i think its great that Michelle Obama helped the kids out. i also think she is a great example of a leader and she just always wants to do the right thing and help out others in need

    2. The findings add an exciting new physical dimension to what scientists know about the many social and emotional benefits volunteering brings students, including: higher levels of positive emotions; a stronger ability to regulate their emotions; lower levels of risk behavior, such as early pregnancy and drug use; increased civic engagement and moral reasoning; and a greater likelihood of volunteering in adulthood.

it interesting how much happiness social and emotional benefits volunteering brings students

    3. One study discovered that student volunteers who worked directly with people versus those who didn’t afterwards felt a stronger connection to other people in general, along with the belief that they could make a difference in the world.

i think some people don't realize how much volunteering can completely change their mindset. people believe that they can change the world and their mindset is motivated and determined

    4. However, I would add from personal experience that requiring service might help students who would never consider volunteering try it out—and they just might fall in love with it. Case in point: One of my best friends was required to do community service in high school and found that working with autistic children changed his life. Rather than becoming a lawyer, he decided to teach high school and start his own fabulous service-learning program

i think people who haven't tried volunteering yet aren't that interested or just don't want to do it, but after they actually try it, it changed their life and they love it

This launched yet another new wave of student protests against police racism, brutality, and the state. Students again blockaded their schools, demanding justice for Théo and all victims of police brutality. At least 16 high schools were closed as a result.

why does it matter that someone has a different skin color as you? i think this is an awful thing to do to anybody and people should learn not to judge someone by their looks

    1. getting women involved in volunteering is an easy pitch: “Women are attracted to the community aspects of volunteering. Volunteering is a chance to meet like-minded women. It’s a social event where they can be at ease.” To attract men, she has found it is more effective to “frame volunteerism as professional development.”

i think its easier to get woman to volunteer is maybe because men don't find it interesting or passionate or they want to volunteer for something else

    2. Women are more likely to volunteer through religious organizations, education groups and health-related organizations, while men are more likely to be involved in civic organizations (such as Rotary International), a sports group or public safety organization.

i think that anyone can volunteer for anything they want. even if it is considered a "boy" thing or "girl' thing

    3. 30.1% of women who work full-time also find the time to volunteer in comparison to just 23.8% of men.

this shows how even when woman are working full time, they still find the time to volunteer. i think this shows how passionate they are about this and how they want to make a difference and help other people!!!!

    4. Though the letters were sent out to a gender balanced group, 95% of the responses came from women.

i think this is because most girls will go through problems that are caused because of men, and men don't its a problem. (e.g: harassment, school, voting...)

    1. Gabriel interviewed, among others, a brave young boy named Wesley, who had started a project to help the local kids. It is a very memorable experience, to see this little boy talking about all the problems like crime and drugs
