Scope note (definition)
Horme is the term for the subjective principle of teleology in each organism by which “life has a tendency to activity”... It is an unconscious willing, like the will in being directed toward an end, but common to “life in general” and not merely to what is “a part of the individual’s awareness”
Frierson, Patrick R. Maria Montessori's Philosophy: Following the Child (pp. 93-99).
Horme
Horme, as Montessori calls it, borrowing the term from P. Nunn, is the vital force active in the individual, similar to Bergson’s vital impulse and Freud’s libido.
Regni, Raniero; Fogassi, Leonardo. Maria Montessori and neuroscience: Brain, Mind, Education (MONTESSORIANA Book 1) (p. 84).
Horme is a term in classical philosophy that refers to the impulse toward action, akin to an unconscious life force. This impulse drives children to explore, learn, and grow according to their developmental needs. Young children are guided by this innate impulse, which ensures that children actively engage with their environment and persist in tasks that contribute to their work of self-construction.
