Using Situational Criticism, described by Lloyd Bitzer in The Rhetorical Situation, we are meaning to analyze the artifact through this method if the artifact presents a problem and/or solution, we have a clear audience to identify constraints and if we have knowable context; information that leads us in understanding the issue in hand. The units of analysis for situational criticism are exigence, audience and constraints (Bitzer, Lloyd F. “The Rhetorical Situation.” Philosophy & Rhetoric, vol. 1, no. 1, 1968, pp. 1–14. JSTOR, http://www.jstor.org/stable/40236733. Accessed 10 May 2025. ). Exigence are referring to an imperfection, defect, obstacle or something waiting to be done. In the case of this song BTS, This specific verse touches upon what is seen as negative and intense fan behavior. There's a sense of irresponsibility towards ones tasks/jobs and complete interest towards them as celebrities. Constant checking on social media updates of a group and dedication of streaming and having merch and posters of them as well. What many see as negative and concerning behavior is accepted by the narrator in hand. the audience in this case is ARMY; BTS fan who will understand where the song may lead to. The fans are the ones being addressed here and referencing outsider descriptions of fans. Constraints (are things that limit the audiences ability to solve the problem) that show up, in this instance fans are aware that they may be hyperfixated in BTS. Although we are presented with this issue of fans interest in celebrities, the ones receiving the attention and support encourage their fans to continue enjoying and loving them and their work. The solution being to give into their temptations (interests) as they caused it.

The blog below touches upon some issues that occur when fans overstep their position as fans which gives many who are unaware of the Kpop community to view the whole Kpop fan community as weird and insane. Cluster criticism developed by Kenneth Burke, helps identify themes of an artifact based on reoccuring words which focuses on a main theme for the artifact. When picking an artifact for this criticism both discursive and nondiscursive artifacts are allowed. However, if the artifact is incomplete such as the example provided in Sonja K. Foss's book "a section of text or looking at a small poem might not work or be enough" because there will be too little data to work with to actually do a cluster analysis. When an artifact is chosen, it must be analyzed in three easy steps; The first thing to do is to find the key terms of the artifact, these are the recurring terms in the artifact that are significant. It is recommended not to pick more than five or six terms. The second step was to chart the terms that cluster around the key terms ** these would be other words that related and can be grouped under a specific key term that strengthens its significance. The third step is to discover an explanation for the artifact** what is the rhetor's thoughts or beliefs in regards to the key terms they had for the artifact. What could it tell us about the rhetor?

In this specific artifact Pied Piper by BTS, from the title Pied Piper we make a connection to the fairy tale Pied Piper of Hamelin. The tale goes that the pied piper was hired by the people of Hamelin to help with the infestation of mice, the pied piper is able to easily lead the mice out by playing a tune on his flute which puts the mice into a trance. Once every single mice is removed, the town closes the entrance of their home and when the Pied Piper returns to get paid for his services the town refuses to pay him and casts him away. As retribution for this shameless/entitled act the pied piper plays his flute specifically targeting the children of the town, his tune hypnotizes all the children and leads them out of town which is where the tale ends. Throughout the song BTS takes on this role of the pied piper, this song being that tune the pied piper plays to attract their audience (ARMY). We arrive to this understanding from the terms constantly used throughout the song. Key Terms/cluster terms: -Paradise: I'm, your, prize, sweet, rescue, warm hand - Song: listen, pied piper, leads you, follow, sound, blow, pipes, pulled
- Dangerous: guilty pleasure, takin' over, ruin, forbidden fruit, can't live without, no escape

Significance: Theres a lot of symbolism and ties to the creation of Adam and Eve, the temptation they get to have the forbidden fruit. The Pied Piper being the tempter that takes their target to their doom or in this instance to paradise. The little bits of danger that are emphasized are those of listeners being at the mercy of the musician, they are unable to refuse and unconsciously follow and are lead away towards this new realm known to be paradise. The song in this instance is supposed to be this tool that caused the audience to follow, attentively listen to and get swept away to this better universe. Paradise or this "better universe" is the bigger gift listeners will get for being apart of this community. listeners get prizes such as songs, content (lives, interactions, photos, vlogs). They'll be the receivers of sweetness, feel safe and welcomed. It feels like the selling and advertisement of a vacation package that is too good and difficult to refuse. There's this understanding of the effortless hook/enchantment which listeners are being warned about but due to already listening to the warning there are no reversals because the benefits are greater than any potential consequence they could imagine.
Although, we get that one rap verse addressing common fan behaviors that may be seen as negative by those outside the community, most of the song is about accepting and telling listeners to continue following and doing what they've been doing so far (having fun, supporting their favorite artists, buying merchandise, etc.).
[1] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsAiX0M7H6U) Just like it can be seen in the video and the meaning of the song, ARMY is seen being in complete synchronization with BTS and rhythm of the song both in movement and singing. Not only are synchronized in this song but in all the songs ever made.

My original method of criticism for this particular artifact was of Fantasy Theme criticism. This method of rhetorical criticism was created by Ernest G. Bormann, which helps provide insights into the shared worldview of groups (Foss, 97). There can be many ways people interpret an artifact be it a song, poem, image, painting, etc. however, when a big enough amount of people arrive to a concise and shared interpretation, share the symbolism, etc. then they have become a community and have form a fantasy theme. Likely artifacts that can be looked at under the lens of fantasy theme are advertisements, songs, books or films or anything where symbolic convergence is seen to occur. Along with this anything said by a major public figure such as a president or artist can also fit into a fantasy theme analysis as they can be that ones to implement a theme which their targeted audience would agree in. When it comes to analyzing the artifact, there are two steps to follow. The first one is coding the artifact for setting, character, and action themes. This means we have to find where this fantasy is taking place, are there various settings or just one. Setting themes can also be the description of characteristics of the setting not just the naming of them. When looking for the character(s) we see who is mentioned, being addressed or doing the narration. What are their characteristics, qualities and assigned motives. Lastly, for action themes or plotlines deal with the actions in which the characters in the drama engage. What are the adjectives used for the characters. The second step for fantasy theme criticism is the construction of the rhetorical vision(s) from the fantasy themes. The way to do so is by identifying patterns in the fantasy themes. From their a shared vision can be concluded. When doing fantasy theme criticism there will be the discovery of major and minor themes, where the major themes will take over the smaller ones as they carry majority of the significance of the artifact. (Foss, Sonja K. Rhetorical Criticism: Exploration and Practice. fourth ed., Waveland Press, 2009.)

Doing a fantasy-theme criticism on BTS's Pied Piper: The major character themes mentioned are those of BTS through the usage of 1st person pronouns (I'm, me, my, I). The second character being the audience/listener aka ARMY (BTS Fans) who are addressed with second person pronouns (you, your, you're). Minor characters mention are parents and boss who are related to the addressed. The characters are in conversation with one another, showing an intimate relationship due to only referring to one's person and their target audience. Lots of references used could only be interpreted by the listeners and viewers of BTS content as opposed to casual and non listeners. The narrator consistently describes themselves as a bit dangerous, sweet, like a pied piper and a guilty pleasure. Although ARMY is not described with any specific characteristics we can infer through their actions about their dedication, loyalty and passivity.
The major setting themes are that of paradise and the mention of the audience's room. Although paradise is not an actual place, it is used to refer to what the narrator (BTS) IS to the listener. BTS's identification with paradise; (a world that they and their fans have reached and are familiar with) and what this paradise is meant to provide. We get descriptions such as sweet, warm, irresistible. Action themes that the narrator does are rescue (ing) you, ruin(ing) you, test(ing) you, taking over you, leading you, blowing the pipes. Theres this emphasis in being in control of the audience, almost hypnotizing them like the pied piper does with his music. It can be described as dangerous as well as rewarding. From our understanding of character, setting and action themes we arrive to the conclusion that there is this vision of acceptance and yielding to ones desire. We get this understanding when only a small verse talks about other characters not approving of this behavior (dedication/admiration) and pointing out what they do that may not seem right (endlessly watching content, the abundance of bts photos, interpreting all they are exposed to, not working as hard in other aspects, etc.). The verse ends by stating that this song (Pied Piper) is a prize, gift, not meant to be a punishment. There's this feeling of gratitude which is pursued throughout the whole song. Give in, let yourself be guided and enjoy being yourself and continue following us. The narrator acknowledges the audiences work and potential to see their work positively which has let them to this shared community.

ARMY community: When this song was released there was a surge of memes floating around the internet, in apps like instagram, twitter, facebook, and other fan community based apps like Amino, V app (Korean live broadcasting/posting app which no longer exists) and what is now known as Weverse (HYBE entertainment company). ARMY have this shared vision that Pied Piper was a diss towards them, and it was telling them to get their act together. This song has gone around to tease ones self for being focused on BTS's everyday work and content. Completely being captured into the loop of voting, capturing photos, listening to music, watching reality tv, interviews, attending events, and so on. Majority of the fans understand that this is not an actually song dissing them but a way to continue capturing their attention and support. Although many use the song as a fun tease many found it to be good motivation. They used it as motivation to achieve goals be it graduating school, getting hired for their dream job, creating a business, etc.

    5. Pied Piper

This youtube video "What does BTS’s Pied Piper REALLY mean? - Background info and folklore analysis" By: The Army Theorist Corner dives into an analysis of what BTS Pied Piper could actually mean, showing as more different than the interpretations music critics and journalist and/or casual listeners believe the song is about usually by placing a deep emphasis on the songs' "negative/reprimanding lyrics". The narrator has a deep understanding of BTS music concepts and messages which focuses on debunking corrupt power and finding self worth within such environments. Although, many took this song as a way of gentle scolding and kind of insinuated the obsessive fandom culture, BTS themselves state that this song was in no means to shame or offend ARMY but it was a unique way of expressing their gratitude to their fans ( BTS RM). The narrator also tries to break down why BTS called the song Pied Piper and its significance to how the song gets its meaning. They look over the general understanding of the folktale (The Pied Piper of Hamelin) and look through all the versions that existed picking one closest to BTS's intentions which was of leading the "children" (fans) into this "paradise" away from the corrupt world they are living in (Pied Piper deceived into doing his job for free, the refusal to pay him caused the pied piper to take all the children of Hamelin away, away from the greed and corruption). In order to support this claim, the narrator brings in examples of other BTS songs and explanations from BTS's book Beyond the Story by Myeongseok Kang.
[1] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbGf2uyWVRg)
