The years took all the fight out of Janie’s face. For a while she thought it was gone from her soul. No matter what Jody did, she said nothing.
Janie was not happy with Joe. She didn’t want to argue and didn’t have any motivation to go against Joe.

It must have been the way Joe spoke out without giving her a chance to say anything one way or another that took the bloom off of things.
Janie was told to give a speech but Joe said that she doesn’t know anything about giving speeches and that her place is in the home. He basically talked down on her and her ability to give a speech.

She didn’t say anything to match up with Nanny’s gladness either. She just fell on a chair with her hips and sat there. Between the biscuits and her beaming pride Nanny didn’t notice for a minute.
Even though Janie got married she isn’t happy like her grandma. I don’t think Janie wants to get married.

Janie’s grandma wants her to get married so she doesn’t get raped like her mom and grandma. I could see that the grandma is trying to protect her but she shouldn’t think that will automatically happen to her too.
