    1. Thus we are all consecrated as, priests by baptism,

We are all sacred in a way. But when it comes to religion priests have dedicated their lives. So that must make them a little more sacred I think.

    1. The same people have many kinds of canoes, in which they cross to all the surrounding islands and rob and plunder wherever they can; they are not different from the other islanders, except that they wear their hair long, like women, and make use of the bows and javelins of cane, with sharpened spear-points fixed in the thickest end, which I have before described, and therefore they are looked upon as ferocious,

Unlike some of the other tribes he wrote about this one Columbus didn't make them sound terrible at everything. He called them ferocious and made them sound like a threat

    2. indeed incompetent to use them, not from any deformity of body (for they are well-formed), but because they are timid and full of fear.

How does he know this? He is jumping to conclusions in both of these when Columbus doesn't even know there language

    3. All these islands are very beautiful, and distinguished

Similar since he mostly has good things to say about the land he comes across. He is almost praising himself for discovering what sounds like heaven.

    1. where our Indians inform us we shall find the king, and that he has much gold.

Similar in that he says that the Indians just so happen to know his language.

    1. "If a blind man leads a blind man, they will both fall into a pit."

Well I believe that this is encouraging the fortunate to help the fortunate, and the wise to pass down their wisdom. Because after all kids need someone who is wise and responsible to teach them right from wrong.

    2. "Blessed is the man who has suffered and found life."

What I think Jesus means here is that it takes a truly special individual to suffer drastically and continue to find happiness.

    3. "Whoever has come to understand the world has found (only) a corpse, and whoever has found a corpse is superior to the world."

What I believe Jesus is saying here is that the world won't live up to the expectations that certain people had. This will make these people feel as if there is nothing left to lose, thus putting them a step ahead of all of their peers.

    1. after putting out the civil war, having obtained all things by universal consent,

So what I am getting from this is that he went around and asked everybody for their consent? I don't think so. He definitely just assumed he had universal consent.

    2. I drove the men who slaughtered my father into exile with a legal order, punishing their crime, and afterwards, when they waged war on the state, I conquered them in two battles.

He showed by exiling them that he has the power to do what he wants if anybody crosses the line. But for anybody who respected the line he rewarded them.

    3. From that year when Gnaeus and Publius Lentulus were consuls (18 Bc), when the taxes fell short, I gave out contributions of grain and money from my granary and patrimony, sometimes to 100,000 men, sometimes to many more.

This showed that he is generous and he cared about his society.

    1. And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.

Job was rewarded for being as loyal as he was during this rough time. So what I got from this is that if you suffer through bad times and remain loyal to god then you will be rewarded.

    2. That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

Has this guy experienced the loss that Job just did? God is testing Job and about to push him past his breaking point. Job hasn't done anything really bad for what has happened to him. There are worse sins.

    3. the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

After all that just happened to him this is all he does. He is clearly loyal to his god.

    1. Our government does not copy our neighbors', but is an example to them.

So all of the other countries or nations must have still been ruled by dictators or kings at this time.

    2. For it is difficult to say neither too little nor too much; and even moderation is apt not to give the impression of truthfulness.

When it comes to tragic deaths, nobody wants to disrespect those who have fallen and I believe that is what this is saying.

    1. But Zeus in the anger of his heart hid it,

The gods have got a lot of problems. I wouldn't think of them having so many issues but they do. When I hear the word god I think of perfection and this shows me the complete opposite

    1. But the rest, countless plagues, wander amongst men; for earth is full of evils, and the sea is full. Of themselves diseases come upon men continually by day and by night, bringing mischief to mortals silently; for wise Zeus took away speech from them.

Seems like the gods are punishing mankind if I understood this right.
