    1. It is impressive, though, that Democrats have provided a platform for a diverse field of candidates to take a shot at the presidency. It gives the illusion that everyone has a fair chance to make it to the top of the ticket, regardless of his or her race, ethnic background, gender or sexual orientation.

While it could be considered laudable to elect someone out of the mainstream, democrats seem to make the mistake that under representation, alone, is sufficient qualifications. It is NOT. Substance is required for electability. In the case of President Obama, this was a glaring flaw missing from his tenure. To the detriment of our nation.

    2. Though we seemed to be headed in that direction three years ago with Hillary Clinton, Trump’s unexpected victory forced us to take a deep detour that set us back in terms of leveling the playing field for minorities and women in high stakes elections.

To generally claim that failing to elect a woman is indicative of bias and non readiness to elect a woman as president, one must ignore the appalling negatives of Hillary Clinton that reduced voter enthusiasm and created wariness and foreboding among voters as to her fitness to be president. The failure to elect a woman, or a black woman, as president, will continue as long as the individual candidates, themselves, put forward by the parties, are either too far from the political mainstream or are not competent or qualified to hold the office.

    3. America isn’t progressive enough to elect a black woman as head of state, any more than it was when Shirley Chisholm ran in 1972. It’s questionable whether our country can elect a woman, period.

Rather than claiming that America isn’t progressive enough to elect a black woman, it could be said, given that such a candidate will inevitably emerge from the far left of the political spectrum, she will never garner widespread support. Whereas, if said woman were a Republican, her appeal and electability would be significantly enhanced.
