    1. To avoid rejection, some of us conform to the values of the culture, push the unacceptable parts into the shadows. Which leaves only one fear—that we will be found out and that the Shadow-Beast will break out of its cage. Some of us take another route. We try to make ourselves conscious of the Shadow-Beast, stare at the sexual lust and lust for power and destruction we see on its face, discern among its features the undershadow that the reigning order of heterosexual males project on our Beast. Yet still others of us take it another step: we try to waken the Shadow-Beast inside us. Not many of us jump at the chance to confront the Shadow-Beast in the mirror without flinching at her lidless serpent eyes, her cold clammy moist hand dragging us underground, fangs barred and hissing. How does one put feathers on this particular serpent? But a few of us have been lucky—on the face of the Shadow-Beast we have seen not lust but tenderness; on its face we have uncovered the lie.

The shadow beast is often a caricature for anything against the norm, the definition being " representative of counterhegemonic subjectivities posed against the normative patriarchy." by the Texas library. I believe she is attempting to portray this evil shadow beast as frightening yes, but empowering because of what it stands for which is a counter-normative society.

    2. It’s an interesting path, one that continually slips in and out of the white, the Catholic, the Mexican, the indigenous, the instincts. In and out of my head. It makes for loquería, the crazies. It is a path of knowledge—one of knowing (and of learning) the history of oppression of our raza. It is a way of balancing, of mitigating duality.

I think she refers to the crazies because of the culture she grew up in and continues to live in, One of Mexico's biggest values is religious, Catholic beliefs are very strong with their faith in God as for Americans as well, from all different colors, including whites. Because the bible states it is a sin to lay with the same gender, I can totally see how this can be difficult for queer people and how it would be chalked up to "loqueria"

    3. Being lesbian and raised Catholic, indoctrinated as straight, I made the choice to be queer (for some it is genetically inherent).

A lot of people make the choice to be queer, it is debated whether it is due to more nature or more nurture, or even events in their pasts. Genetically inherent is not entirely founded on science, there is no "gay gene" or "straight gene" per say but I believe some are predisposed to homosexuality more than others. It is sad to see how they socially suffer though.

    1. We plead to each other,we all come from the same rockwe all come from the same rockignoring the fact that we bendat different temperaturesthat each of us is malleableup to a point.

I like the comparison in these sentences, here, he is stating that we as mankind come in all shapes, sizes, colors, ethnicity and cultures, yet we come from the same earth, and we share the genes of being human beings. Each one of us can change, so we should treat each other with love and respect, regardless of our differences.

    2. But in the end, some will just sit aroundtalking about how good the old world was. Some of the younger ones will become gangsters. Some will die and others will go on livingwithout a soul, a future, or a reason to live. Some will make it out of here with hate in their eyes, but so very few make it out of here as humanas they came in, they leave wondering what good they are nowas they look at their hands so long away from their tools,as they look at themselves, so long gone from their families,so long gone from life itself, so many things have changed.

Many immigrants who trade in their life for a better one in the U.S fall short of success due to struggles along the way. There is freedom but no guide, you have to have foreknown knowledge in order to succeed in this world, which many immigrants do not unfortunately. The outcomes of this is damaging, some fall into drugs, gangs, radicalized hatred, and a shallow humanity without a soul.

    3. We are given shots and doctors ask questions. Then we gather in another roomwhere counselors orient us to the new landwe will now live in. We take tests. Some of us were craftsmen in the old world,

To many immigrants who have the opportunity to live in the U.S, they often feel like they're trading their soul, culture, and lives to be birthed into someone entirely different. Assimilation seems like assassinations' of the self, and it is scary because there is no guarantee their choice will grant them success.

    4. i’ll laugh at mean ass convicts who terrify the worldyet love to eat ice cream

This is an emotional statement, the comparison between how the world sees convicts versus how convicts see convicts is really telling. The media likes to make some convicts out to be like monsters-terrifying the population. But once you get to know them and observe them, they're human- flesh and all who have an inner child that got lost along the way.
