    1. A silver lining: It has kicked off globally, the quest to tackle food waste. Feeding the 5,000 is an event I first organized in 2009. We fed 5,000 people all on food that otherwise would have been wasted.

I feel like this is a really good idea to start to stop the end of food waste. Recycling the food that would have otherwise been thrown away is a great idea. We need more of these events to really help stop food waste. These events don't only feed families and help stop the waste, but they also raise awareness for the issue. If 5,000 people get def from food that would have been wasted, what's to say those people won't start to spread the word about the issue.

    2. As a country gets richer, it invests more and more in getting more and more surplus into its shops and restaurants, and as you can see, most European and North American countries fall between 150 and 200 percent of the nutritional requirements of their populations. So a country like America has twice as much food on its shop shelves and in its restaurants than is actually required to feed the American people.

This statement is very true since if you look into restaurants and shops, they throw away a lot of food. I used to work at Chick-Fil-A and on any given night we would throw away over $100 worth of food, that's like 25 chicken sandwiches being thrown away. In addition, at the end of each shift all of the extra food was ordered to be thrown away and we were not allowed to take it home. This is a prime example of food waste as I could be taking those sandwiches home to my family and not for the garbage.

    3. here will always be waste. I’m not that unrealistic that I think we can live in a waste-free world. But that black line shows what a food supply should be in a country if they allow for a good, stable, secure, nutritional diet for every person in that country.

I think this is a very fair statement since it is virtually impossible to not have waste. While it is virtually impossible, steps still need to be taken to try and eliminate the waste. I feel like not only our country, but every country should work towards eliminating waste in the food systems. It can start with knowing what each country needs in terms of amount of food. This will greatly help lower the waste by each country.

    1. Economic growth seems to have really helped in the fight against poverty,

Economic growth is a vital component in the fight against poverty. Through economic growth, more jobs can be created to help lift people out of poverty. While not every country pays all of its workers a livable wage, it is a start to lift everyone out of poverty. Creating the jobs needed starts for workers to get roofs over their heads and meals on their table to eat. Every person in the world contributes to economic growth through buying and selling goods. This is a branch of GDP; by increasing GDP, economic growth increases the fight against this issue.

    2. The Social Progress Index sums all this together using 52 indicators to create an aggregate score on a scale of 0 to 100.

While this might be a good idea to measure social progress and quantify it, it is easy to interpret for the reader. It might not actually show social progress amongst the people of the world. Every person's wants and needs are very different from one another. One person might be satisfied with living out in the wild, not having a concrete definition of safety. For example, native tribes of any land might not have the safest living conditions than 21st century standards, but they are more than content with how they live their lives. It makes it easier to comprehend social progress using this index; it might not be the best way to define progress.

    3. Do you think the world is going to be a better place next year? In the next decade?

Before reading the transcription, I just wanted to make some comments about this statement and share my opinions. In my opinion, I feel like even within the next year, the world is going to be a better place. Right now, we are all fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, and hopefully, we can at least have it under control and mitigate the risk to the people of our society. In addition to fighting Covid, I envision that there will be new inventions and ideas crucial to a sustainable society. I hope that this place will be 10 times better for the next decade than it already is now. I hope we can leave our lives in peace and unity.

    1. Act toward and write to others as you would want them to do for you if the roles were reversed

I feel like this is a really good summary of compassion. Whenever I try to show compassion, I try to think if I was in another persons shoes and do what ever is necessary to help them. Whether its holding the door behind me or helping me study for classes in which I'm struggling. These little actions go a long way for someone. Especially if they have been struggling with whatever problems that may have arose, the little things really help bring up their mood.

    2. The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical, and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves.

I feel like all foundations of compassion stem from how you were raised. People's sense of compassion can differ based off what their surroundings taught them to do. Specifically different religions or different traditions teach different ways to be compassionate. However, they all strive to meet the same goal of treating others how you want to be treated. While some ways have different means of showing compassion, they all try to meet that common end goal.

    3. Charter for Compassion

When I read this title, I expect to read about ways to be compassionate or what it means to be compassionate. Personally, ways to be compassionate can come in many forms. Some examples off the top of my head are holding the door for someone who is behind you or listening to the problems of others and helping them take steps to resolving those issues. Both of these examples have an underlying theme of being kind and courteous; which to me, is what it means to be compassionate.
