This was a very interesting reading. We often criticize the noble savage narrative today, and rightly so, but it is important to put this work and perspective. In comparison to many of the readings we have had so far this is a surprisingly tolerant piece. Furthermore, in comparison to Diderot's "Who are you then to make slaves?" this is much less ideological and angsty - Diderot legit wrote noble savage fan fiction. Although Montaigne is mistaken about many things and underestimates the complexity of their culture, he seems mostly to be curious of these people and is trying argue that we ought to give them and their way of life some credit and to reconsider ours. He in some places makes the very astute observation of noticing cultural centrism. Still, his points seems to be that European society is frivolous and violent, so we ought not judge to harshly.
