And like stealing I imagine and then praising God for it. I understand do what you need to survive, but while knowing your own children are out there suffering as well?
Then I took it of the child, and eat it myself, and savory it was to my taste.
Stealing from children is crazy. Did the child give it to her because they could not eat it or did she take it?
but the child could not bite it, it was so tough and sinewy
At least they tried it, unlike her when she was first presented with horse meat. Valid in some sense though I would be freaked out by horse meat, but I also don’t really eat it anyway

Experiencing what so many Natives probably had to see when they saw their people dead.
Englishman stripped naked,
Oh wow, okay then
We took up our packs
Is she only carrying her own items or is she carrying others as well?
Some of them told me he was dead, and they had killed him; some said he was married again, and that the Governor wished him to marry; and told him he should have his choice, and that all persuaded I was dead. So like were these barbarous creatures to him who was a liar from the beginning.
Good to not jump to conclusions with so many narratives. Crazy to call them barbarians because they lied (they’re her captors, they COULDVE killed her instead of lying)

Okay she’s still pulling verses from everywhere so I would say her faith still grows strong, she’s just mad at God sometimes. But not losing faith
Yet I can say, that in all my sorrows and afflictions, God did not leave me to have my impatience work towards Himself, as if His ways were unrighteous. But I knew that He laid upon me less than I deserved.
Religion crisis? Is she realizing that God can not take over her life to save her? Is she still believing in God to help her? What is it?
but that failed also. I thought of being sold to my husband, as my master spake, but instead of that, my master himself was gone, and I left behind, s

forgetting where I was, and what my condition was; b
So religion is giving her a reality check. She was forgetting her condition and just living in the moment and surviving with what she had, not dwelling on the past. How bad or good is that?
removed a stick that kept the heat from me. A squaw moved it down again, at which I looked up, and she threw a handful of ashes in mine eyes.
I would guess she threw the ashes because Mary was trying to change and potentially ruin (i don’t know what it was like) the fire and was being selfish especially as a captive.
I considered their horrible addictedness to lying, and that there is not one of them that makes the least conscience of speaking of truth
Even if i thought someone was lying about that I feel like I would still be grieving because I don’t actually have any proof of them lying. Also the generalization of ALL of them being liars is wild.
He answered me that such a time his master roasted him, and that himself did eat a piece of him, as big as his two fingers, and that he was very good meat.
Okay WHAt is this. I’m guessing he is lying, tormenting her…? Cause I don’t think I’ve read about the native people eating other humans…. Unless this is new. Obviously terrible to here as a mother in the first place though
Here one asked me to make a shirt for her papoose, for which she gave me a mess of broth, which was thickened with meal made of the bark of a tree, and to make it the better, she had put into it about a handful of peas, and a few roasted ground nuts.
Once again she’s basically trading with them and is using her skills (sewing/making clothes) to her advantage to survive
which was that I desired,
In any world would a captive have any authority over where they would go? Maybe she is just saying this because it’s showing how she was always in like discomfort but still….
told them the skin was off my back, but I had no other comforting answer from them than this: that it would be no matter if my head were off too.
She always wants pity and praise and if she doesn’t get it, she throws a fit and makes the Natives look evil
at last an old Indian bade me to come to him, and his squaw gave me some ground nuts; she gave me also something to lay under my head, and a good fire we had; and through the good providence of God, I had a comfortable lodging that night. I
SO even though it was the Native people who once again gave her food and shelter, she’s giving God the credit and not the kindness of the native people

I complained it was too heavy, whereupon she gave me a slap in the face, and bade me go

Why is there all of a sudden a rejection of her religion? Are they just now noticing it or did she hide it before?

Would her kids be coming? Probably not? Really shows how women are treated during this time. Just objects to own and use as financial advantage

I always forget what sabbath day is and that it’s weekly and I get so lost why it’s mentioned so often
I could hardly bear to think of the many weary steps I had taken, to come to this place.

It has shown so far that they are not against their religion, is there something that has not been shown which causes him to hide his prayer? Different groups of Natives = different ideas? Again, how reliable is Mary as a narrator
bear
Wonder how bear tastes. I don’t like eating meat but like you never really hear that
I thought I never tasted pleasanter meat in my life
Again, adapting to their food, in contrast to when she refused to even try their meat. She’s basically trading here, services for food.
could not but be amazed at the numerous crew of pagans that were on the bank on the other side.
Is Pagan meaning the same thing that I might currently think of in this text? Why is she SO amazed, is it good or bad?
. I offered the money to my master, but he bade me keep it; and with it I bought a piece of horse flesh
She’s finally accustomed to their food, buying horse meat on purpose. Nice of her master to allow her to keep the shilling. She sees them as heartless, but never looks deeper.
yelling and hooting
Still seems kind of offensive but doesn’t seem as harsh as a previous description she created. Maybe she is getting used to it and not seeing it as crazy and barbaric
whether I would smoke it
Whether she would smoke “it”???? This is like that whole baby IT thing, what is it, tobacco or something else
Yet I answered, they would kill me. “No,” said he, “none will hurt you.” Then came one of them and gave me two spoonfuls of meal to comfort me, and another gave me half a pint of peas; which was more worth than many bushels at another time.
Assumption vs reality. Don’t assume the worst and you may be helped. Assume the worst and you may be pleasantly surprised.
Then my heart began to fail: and I fell aweeping, which was the first time to my remembrance, that I wept before them.
Why is she crying only now in front of them? Finally too much to bear? Must be a significance in it being NOW and now when her child died, being hurt, or any other moment in her captivity
I observed they asked one another questions, and laughed, and rejoiced over their gains and victories.
She’s seeing the human (in her view) in them

That was very kind of this man

Does she consider it a home? What makes a home
Oh! the outrageous roaring and hooping that there was. They began their din about a mile before they came to us. By their noise and hooping they signified how many they had destroyed (which was at that time twenty-three).
I’m guessing this was houses? 23 houses burnt? Burning homes would certainly be a big roar.
a small plantation of Indians, where it seems he had been during his captivity; and at this time, there were some forces of the Ind. gathered out of our company, and some also from them (among whom was my son’s master) to go to assault and burn Medfield.
And what would this action DO in this society? also, a plantation?
In this time of the absence of his master, his dame brought him to see me. I took this to be some gracious answer to my earnest and unfeigned desire.
The dame is not only under the master and has her own free will to act. She is thankful basically too.

So the girls name was Sarah?
my son came to me, and asked me how I did. I had not seen him before, since the destruction of the town, and I knew not where he was,
How did he know how and where to find her? How did this separation of family and death of a sibling effect the other two children?
He would consider my low estate, and show me a token for good, and if it were His blessed will, some sign and hope of some relief.

When I came in sight, she would fall aweeping; at which they were provoked, and would not let me come near her, but bade me be gone
So they could see each other but the Natives would not let the mother comfort her crying daughter? Cruel there
I went to see my daughter Mary, who was at this same Indian town, at a wigwam not very far off, though we had little liberty or opportunity to see one another.
So although they had “little liberty” to see each other, I mean I guess it’s shocking to me that hey could see each other at all and that hey knew where they both were.
Praying Ind. and afterward sold for a gun
What is a praying Indian(?) and wow she was sold for a gun??
Then they went and showed me where it was, where I saw the ground was newly digged, and there they told me they had buried it.
Honestly, okay, compassion there. They buried the body, not just leaving it somewhere.

Still always with the “it” when talking about her own child

Wow no sympathy? They made her abandon her child’s lifeless body?

God to me
She wanted to kill herself basically, but remained strong within even after her baby died, and says God is the reason why. Strong of her to still find reason in life, even if it is just God. Also, I wonder now, what was the child’s name? Why did we not learn it? Too hard to say or was it more normal to only say “babe?”
I cannot but take notice how at another time I could not bear to be in the room where any dead person was, but now the case is changed; I must and could lie down by my dead babe, side by side all the night after.
Becomes used to death. and also, i mean, it is her own child so.

How was she having visitors
how righteous it was with God to cut off the thread of my life and cast me out of His presence forever.
It’s sad that she believes that if she prayed more(?) she would not have been thrown into this by God and that she holds guilt that God abandoned her
I then remembered how careless I had been of God’s holy time; how many Sabbaths I had lost and misspent, and how evilly I had walked in God’s sight;
So basically I guess she didn’t pray to God and now she is all upset about it. How far into “hell” and suffering can one go without questioning? God can do no wrong. Natives are never under God and are therefore evil creations of …. The devil? satan? How does it work

wonderful power of God, that my Spirit did not utterly sink under my affliction: still the Lord upheld me with His gracious and merciful spirit, and we were both alive to see the light of the next morning.
Is she ever doubting God? Or just pouring her full being into it.
My own wound also growing so stiff that I could scarce sit down or rise up; yet so it must be, that I must sit all this cold winter night upon the cold snowy ground, with my sick child in my arms, looking that every hour would be the last of its life; and having no Christian friend near me, either to comfort or help me.
Even if you had a Christian friend nearby I don’t know if they could help you, maybe comfort you, but I don’t know about help. She’s heavily dropping her emotions her and the waterfall of everything effecting her mental state and physical state.
quickly began to snow, and when night came on, they stopped, and now down I must sit in the snow,
Wait, what month was this again, February ish? How much snow are we talking and how were they protected against it (clothing wise)
But the Lord renewed my strength still, and carried me along, that I might see more of His power;
She still believes that it is the Lord giving her all of this strength instead of her own internal will. And maybe she draws this internal will (unknowingly that it is herself) from her belief that the lord is real, so in one case it’s her lord, but also herself.
At length I took it off the horse, and carried it in my arms till my strength failed, and I fell down with it. Then they set me upon a horse with my wounded child in my lap, and there being no furniture upon the horse’s back, as we were going down a steep hill we both fell over the horse’s head, at which they, like inhumane creatures, laughed, and rejoiced to see it, though I thought we should there have ended our days, a
She still sees and labels them as inhumane creatures even though they helped her. They carried her baby and once she was too weak, they put her on the horses back which they definitely did not need to do. Yes, they laughed when she fell off, but maybe they didn’t expect it because it was normalized to ride a horse without a seat? Also, she’s still technically their prisoner. I wonder what they are thinking truly? I feel like even if my best friend were riding a horse if they fell off, after I knew they were okay, I’d be laughing too. Maybe that’s modern norms shining, but I wouldn’t say they were inhumane for that. But to be fair, I also get embarrassed easily and it feels like the end of the world if it’s REAL embarrassing
I shall die, I shall die.
Holy negative thoughts……
One of the Indians carried my poor wounded babe upon a horse;
Is it because it is a baby? Has done no right or wrong? They accept that fact and help it.
but God was with me in a wonderful manner, carrying me along, and bearing up my spirit, that it did not quite fail.
Religion gives her a reason to live, a light in the darkness, “sparing” her
I must turn my back upon the town, and travel with them into the vast and desolate wilderness,
Vast and desolate to her, but did the Natives know it? Even if it is unknown to one person does not mean it is unknown to all, especially the native people of a land.
as the Indians told me.
How did they communicate, did they not have a language barrier? In other ways, what forms of communication were used?
Those seven that were killed at Lancaster the summer before upon a Sabbath day, and the one that was afterward killed upon a weekday, were slain and mangled in a barbarous manner,
Did they DO something? For every “white man” killed, how many natives followed?
savageness and brutishness of this barbarous enemy,
Harsh words, what actions caused this?

“It’ being used in reference to a child, maybe her child? I think at least, from he introduction about who she was, I think she had a young child with her.
my thoughts ran upon my losses and sad bereaved condition. All was gone, my husband gone (at least separated from me, he being in the Bay; and to add to my grief, the Indians told me they would kill him as he came homeward), my children gone, my relations and friends gone, our house and home and all our comforts—within door and without—all was gone (except my life), and I knew not but the next moment that might go too.
Even for whatever reason the Natives may have done this, it’s definitely hard to have all of your family and home life taken away from you, being alone, especially in hardship.

She was a colonial American woman who was captured by Native Americans in 1676 during King Philip’s War. Her family suffered a lot. She suffered.
as we make our voices heard in a public context.
Why do we find it important to be publicly acknowledged?
We hope to shift the focus from the nation to the larger, global implications for what defines something as “American.”
How do people globally view American literature? Do they even think about it as we do with, say, British Literature?
and even weave some comedy and sass in there
Keep it interactive and fun, engaging, but also serious enough to learn.

future PSU English students will feel inspired to contribute to, annotate, and continue this project, constantly refining, remixing, and reworking it going forward.
As meanings change, PSU students can change it as well. It is left to students to decide what is valued and what’s worth being in the project.
We do not claim to have a “perfect” or “complete” representation of American literature.
Good to state and understand that it is not perfect. What would a theoretical “perfect” representation be?
How can we possibly define American literature without comprehending the fragility, complexity, and pride that accompanies such a term? “
You have to get into the dirty deep questions in order to understand a small fraction of a difficult question involving America

this anthology takes things a step further because it makes connections between important works of American literature and contemporary culture (such as films and other references
It takes modern age concepts from films and other references as stated and compares them to the old literature
it moves beyond the voices of old white men talking about even older white men.

Curiosity is a sin, leads to punishment and downfall, “destroyed” is a strong word.
the Fall of Man
Not all of Man though, just the Natives? Right……..?
Truly it would have been wise and well for those of early times if they could have held their tongues.
Moral of this story and myth. Keep to yourself, don’t push others or you will get yourself hurt.
And she arose and went her way into the woods and up the mountain, and was seen on earth no more
What happened in the end, did she take her son, did she/they die? Is this a punishment for the people or herself? Did she experience loneliness once again, what’s the price to pay to have company?
From this day ye may feed yourselves and find your own venison, for this child shall do so no more for you.”
Honestly valid. Like I get that the people kept asking and asking questions and wanting more food and she did not want her son to be taken advantage of. But still, this is a big punishment for being curious. Huge mother-son relationship being shown.
Can you not see who was the father of my boy? Behold his eyebrows; do ye not know Katahdin by them?
She thinks that her son is too good and obviously the son of the great powerful mountain by his looks.

Over what? What makes a nation worthy of this? Someone who doesn’t question authority or higher ups?
