Overall, I felt Mukherjee through this piece was returning back to reality after the loss of his father. By creating this piece focused on his father's passing and including detailed descriptions of scientific material it seems Mukherjee is using an area he is comfortable in to aid in expressing the experience without expressing his personal raw emotion to the experience. Through this essay I feel Mukherjee is not only closer to coming to terms with his own experience but has offered a remedy for any of the audience going through a similar experience as he did.

I think the use of some comedy and irony within the essay is important to why the author may have written this piece.

    3. I didn’t make much of this quiet whirr of morning activity until later that week, when a middle-aged woman was brought to the clinic, wild-eyed and blue-lipped for lack of breath, evidently in the throes of a life-threatening asthma flare.

This particular section and a few others seem to make reference to taking certain things for granted. I feel these uses of imagery can somewhat parallel the author's own feelings towards his father and his relationship with him.
