People realized very quickly that pictures taken of a moving object, could be flipped through in succession, to create the illusion of a motion picture. The earliest animations were created this way; simple drawings photographed one at a time. It was obviously an extremely tedious process, and we had to wait till the development of celluloid in the 1920’s for easier methods to evolve.

This is very true. it blew my mind when my nephew could understand the internet at 6 years old.
When he read the Web address, http://pubweb.northwestern.edu/~abutz/di/intro.html, he assumed that the domain name “northwestern.edu” automatically meant it was a credible source. He did not understand that the “~” character, inserted after the domain name, should be read as a personal Web page and not an official document of the university.
I don't think this is common knowledge though. I personally didn't know this.
