Art can make you more aware
I think that this is 100 percent true. I think that art can make you see things in a way that you couldn't see them before. Art makes you observe things from another point of view.

Six: Can art make us smarter?
I think that almost anything can make you smarter. Having information is a goof thing and you live and learn by doing things. So yes I think that art can make you smarter because art can make you learn about things that you did not know before.
The effect of those tiny art shocks is cumulative and enduring.
I find this true. In life we can find the little things that make us happy and make us feel safe and at home.
We understand it, and we don't. It's irreducible; it can't be summarized or described; we feel something we can't describe.
I think that this statement is just about life in general. We understand why things happen but it can be confusing at the same time. its the same way with art. You can see some ting that is beautiful but you don't know why it is beautiful.
The warm days are over." Why should that seem beautiful?
I think that you can find beauty in everything in life. Its just how you see it because everyone sees things differently.
Though it does seem a little strange to ban the word from the conversations of people for whom it is a matter of life and death.
I do not think that people should be afraid to say something that will offend somebody. We live in a country that promotes freedom of speech that is positive and doesn't start vilence.
Unraveling the word beauty can get us so ensnared that it’s no wonder that for a time, critics and academics and even some artists agreed that it was probably better not to use it at all.
I agree that the word beauty and beautiful can be overused sometimes, but this because everyone has different opinions what they think is beautiful.
One: Art can be beautiful.
What a great title for this part of the story. Art is very beautiful and it grabs the attention of the reader right away.
The world is not a safe place to live in.
I completely agree with this statement. The world get more and more dangerous everyday. I am told all the time that this is not the same world as my parents grew up in.
Humans fear the supernatural,
I feel like this is true, but I think it would be better if they said humans fear what they can not control.
The culture expects women to show greater acceptance of, and commitment to, the value system than men.
If this person is catholic, which since they are Mexican-American I am guessing that they are, this would be correct off of religious standards. Catholics and other religions that believe in God believe that the woman should serve and support the man of the house, and the man should protect and support the woman and kids.
Culture is made by those in power—men.
I don't know when this was written but men do not have much power anymore in 2023.
I was the first in six generations to leave the Valley, the only one in my family to ever leave home.
Once again, this is another thing that I can relate too. My entire family has gone to school in Texas, but I chose baseball over staying close to home. So, I will be the fist college athlete in my family and the first person to go to college in another state.
I had to leave home so I could find myself, find my own intrinsic nature buried under the personality that had been imposed on me.
I can definitely relate to this statement. As a homeschool student with strict religious parents, I have always been forced to like certain things and see the world in a certain way. Now as I am getting older and getting ready to go off to college, I am able to start making decisions for myself and find out who I really am.
I have a vivid memory of an old photograph: I am six years old. I stand between my father and mother, head cocked to the right, the toes of my flat feet gripping the ground. I hold my mother’s hand.
I think everyone can relate to the opening of this story. Everyone has that one photo that they own that they can tell you everything about.
We are born with dreams in our hearts, looking for better days ahead.
I like how this poem starts. It immediately connects with the reader because everyone has dreams or at least did when they were younger.
I am the welder.I am taking the powerinto my own hands.
This is a powerful way to end this poem. He knows who he is. He loves who he is. He is proud of who he is. He knows that he has a lot of power in his hands.
No magic here.Only the heat of my desire to fusewhat I already knowexists.
I like this. Its a man believing in what he know is real and being confident in his work. It does kind of feel like he or she is talking to a child though.
I kind of like the sound of bitch– such a word. seems to leap right off the tongue:
This into to this poem definitely shocked me. It was powerful and it made me laugh. I have to agree with the line though. The word dose jump of the tongue.
You bring out the Dolores del Río in me.The Mexican spitfire in me.
I can feel the love that the author is writing in this poem. They tell the person that they bring out the best in them, the fun in them, the fire in them.
When all was gone, the concrete riverwas always thereand me, always running.
I really felt how the character felt in this line. Sometimes you feel like you can never stop running, never can slow down, too scared to enjoy life while your young.
It didn’t start when I tried to get it goingearlier that night.
That's what you get for driving a Chevy. They never start.
A 1954 Chevy Bel-Air stared back.It was my favorite possession.
This line reminded me of my dad. He isn't a Chevy guy but his two cars are his prize possessions.
daybreak bloomed like a rose
This sounds so beautiful. I had never heard a description like this before.
Mouths full of laughter, the turistas come to the tall hotelwith suitcases full of dollars.
Right off the bat this into makes me want to keep reading. It sounds like the character is having a good time and I want to know why they are laughing and have lots of money. Right now I am guessing they are in a casino.
The summer we are fourteen Rio kisses me for the first time as he zips me into a dress
Young love is so sweet.
When he was in bed, where he sometimes prayed, he thanked God for his mom, who he loved, and he apologized to Him for not talking to her, or to anyone, really, except his friend Albert, and he apologized for her never going to church and for his never taking Holy Communion, as Albert did—though only to God would he admit that he wanted to because Albert did.
The child is very grateful for his mother doing everything that she can for him. He just wants her to be happy and successful to the point that he is apologizing to God for not going to church.
When his mom was working as a restaurant hostess, and was going to marry the owner, Erick ate hot-fudge sundaes and drank chocolate shakes.
It sounds like this woman would do anything for her kid. She wants to give him the best life and wants to provide and take care of him.
She almost always gave the man her number if he was wearing a suit. Not a sports coat but a buttoned suit with a starched white shirt and a pinned tie meant something to her.
This woman has standards and knows what she wants in life.

Horns Down. Gig'em Aggies
I didn’t argue with her. My mother didn’t like people to disagree with her.
I can relate to this. I never argue with my mother. Why try to fight something that you know you cant win.
My mother never hit me, not once, not ever, and she kissed me just when I needed to be kissed.
I love this sentence. t really shows the love that the mother has toward the child.
The first time we made love, I tasted my own tears on your skin.
That's weird.
I’ve never told you, but I loved a boy once.
This shocked me. I definitely did not expect this, but we also don't know the sex of the story teller at the moment.
I stayed on the roads. Listened to the wind and the music.
I feel like the author wants the reader to know that the main character likes driving. He is very descriptive when it come to him telling us what he feels, hears, and sees when he is driving. It almost feels like driving is the characters safe space, it is how he feels free. and I can relate to that.
I tried jerking off.
I didn't need to know that.
I sit at truck-stop diners, drinking cup after cup of coffee. I have something sweet. Pancakes. Or pie. Or cake.
I would never eat at a truck stop but the food sounds delicious. I definitely relate with the characters sweet tooth.
I’d never do anything that would keep us apart. What I am is yours.
I love these two sentences. It shows the reader how much the story teller loves this woman.
I followed you here. I’d follow you anywhere.
What a strong start to this story. It really grabs the emotions of the reader right away.
I am Joaquín
This is the first time we hear the writer say his name. In this line he sounds proud of his name and is saying it boldly.
I excommunicated him, my blood.I drove him from the pulpit to leada bloody revolution for him and me. . . . I killed him.
This part of the poem got a little dark, but it was also very powerful. He is fighting a battle and had taken the life of one of his enemies. He tells the reader exactly what's going on in detail other then one part. When he said 'I killed him" it was brief, like he didn't want to tell the ready how he killed his enemy or if he just didn't know how in the moment.
THE GROUND WAS MINE.
Another great part of this poem. He claimed the ground and everything on it for himself. He is going out and getting what he wants in life.
I am the eagle and serpentof Aztec civilization.
This line was interesting to me. In religious terms an eagle and a serpent are nothing alike. They are actually symbols of good and evil. With most Aztec's being forced into Catholicism, this shocked me because the writer is saying that he his both good and evil. He also seems proud to be both the eagle and the serpent.
confused by the rules,
This line stuck out to me. As a young man just starting his walk in life it can be a little confusing. I grew up in a Christian household where things of the outside world were considered wrong. But, now as I am given freedom I am confused by what the world is teaching others my age.
I am Joaquín,lost in a world of confusion,
This was a strong opening to this poem. It immediately connects with the reader in todays world. Most people especially teens and young adults are confused about what is going on in this world. This first sentence really grabs the reader and makes them want to read the next line.
