    1. Althusser’s

In political theory here at Xavier, I learned that Athusser believed that "neo Marxist concept of the ideological state apparatus seeks to expose the social causes that permit continual class exploitation via the reproduction of the conditions of production as the ultimate condition of production."

    2. “crisis of representation”

In my philosophy class, the term came from George Marcus and Michael Fischer to refer specifically to the uncertainty within the human sciences about adequate means of describing social reality.

    3. protagonists

In litertaure, I've always wondered could can the protagonist be his own antagonist?

One example I was able to distinctly note of the protagonist and antagonist was Harry Potter vs. Lord Voldemort

    4. A realistic portrayal of a future that might really happen isn’t really part of the project

As a kid, I remember watchng the movie meet the Robinson....I challenge everyone to watch it because it does have both utopia and dystopian elements. That will better help us learn the concepts alittle more clearly and in a fun inviting way. Some important elements that appear in the movie that make it a utopian society is Todayland has the light, airy, green feeling Todayland has the light, airy, green feeling ,and less conditioned society. However, its dystopia because people are enslaved, hard labor.....Just watch the movie if you haven't lol!

    1. when men live with no other security but what theirown strength and ingenuity provides them with

Does this create a feeling of helplessness or insecurity when a man knows he cannot protect his/herself?

    2. ought to be allowed to him, as it is necessary to his survival.·Glory·: Every man wants his associates to value himas highly as he values himself;

This lets us know that people need validation to get through life. from there job, friend, significant other, etc. Glory can mean awards, word of affirmation, ceremonies, etc.

    3. Distrust·: Because of this distrust amongst men, themost reasonable way for any man to make himself safe is to

I always struggled with the meaning of distrust and mistrust, Distrust is the complete lack of trust that tends to be based on an experience. Mistrust is a complete lack of trust that tends to not be based on experience but more of instinct or gut feeling.

    4. such equalityincredible is really just one’s vain sense of one’s own wisdom,

everyone's experiences are different and what you learn from those experiences define if you are wise or not.

I working an internship and a lady came to take and she said " experience is the best teacher but the wise don't need it."

    5. he weakest man is strong enough to kill the strongest, eitherby a secret plot or by an alliance with others who are in thesame danger that he is in.

I think this looking past the physical appearance, this has a lot to do with the mind set of the individual. A man who may physically look weak can have the ability to outsmart the strong man. And people may think the strong man may succeed because of his physical appearance.....here we learn that looks can be deceiving

    6. hope to obtain

hope is the desire for something but the conflict occurs when I compare success and failure....like what's on the other side of hope when you don't really get what you hoped for

    1. Legislative power became a mere fiction andthe executive power (which controlled the judiciary as well as the mass media) directlyissued new laws, among them laws calling for preservation of the race (the formal Italiangesture of support for what became the Holocaust)

I got this from my PSCI text book but Legislative—Makes laws (Congress, comprised of the House of Representatives and Senate) Executive—Carries out laws (president, vice president, Cabinet, most federal agencies) Judicial—Evaluates laws (Supreme Court and other courts)

    2. immortal destiny of Italy

In high school, I did a project on Mussolini and how he dismantled the institutions of democratic government. His purpose was to set about attempting to re-establish Italy as a great European power.

    1. We must not forget, however, that in the primal family only the head of it enjoyed this instinctual freedom;

Is the author talking about the head of the early stage household being the man could only enjoy freedom from his instinct? maybe this needs to be broken down to me alittle bit more.

    2. The liberty of the individual is no gift of civilization. I

Liberty should be given to all people it should not be seen as prize or a price to pay. It should naturally be given for people to have their own mind and ability to make choices whether good or bad.

    3. Long ago he formed an ideal conception of omnipotence and omniscience which he embodied in his gods. To these gods he attributed everything that seemed unattainable to his wishes, or that was forbidden to him.

It's almost seems as if he wishes to gods as a genie in bottle especially if he's wishing for things that he is aware that he should not be asking for. I guess it made me think of idol worshipers and people who idealized other god's

    4. gramophone disc

I use to this term being called a phonograph disc record. It's basically a record that plays music or stores songs that have a needle to operate and makes it vibrate back and forth, I think they used it "back in the day"

    5. reducing infantile mortality when it is precisely that reduction which imposes the greatest restraint on us in the begetting of children, so that, taken all round, we nevertheless rear

When taking a health class at Xavier, I learned that some possible factors for reducing infantile mortality would be preventing Birth Defects, Addressing Preterm Birth, Low Birth Weight, Getting Pre-Pregnancy and Prenatal Care. Creating a Safe Infant Sleep Environment.

    6. We do not admit it at all; we cannot see why the regulations made by ourselves should not, on the contrary, be a protection and a benefit for every one of us

I think this a lot of time comes with choices and having a free will. Many people do not want to do what the authorities tell us to do, even if it is to protect. Many people are condition to thinking there way may be the best way to protect their families and loved ones

    7. suffering

In my life time, I have learned that many people enjoy suffering because it seems as though they will be in the same spot for a lifetime. But, it seems like the polar opposite word came to mind which is to endure

    8. here seems no greater prospect of learning anything new.

Learning can be fun, but it is also complex when an individual does not fully understand concepts or the given material, at hand.

    1. when everyone is formally free, how can there be class domination? W hy do class distinctions persist betweenthe wealthy, who own the means of production, and the mass of people, whowork for them? The theory of exploitation a

I think this looks at capitalist as the control of the means of production and the ability of workers controlling only their labor. This means that workers are coerced as they allow their labor to be exploited.

    2. Blacks are not a simple, unified groupwith a common life.

I believe that blacks have the potential to be a unified group. Like the Black Lives Matter movement, I have seen people, especially black come together because of the hardship and police brutality that particular group of people have come in account with.

    3. it is foolish to den)'. the reality of group

I agree with this part because a person cannot sugarcoat experiences and they have to be transparent of the issues that community bears. Because for generations people carry these issues into the lives of their families, so a person must be content and begin to tell stories of real events, that show real emotions, instead of just mentioning how we've overcome.

    4. skin coior is fairly light,

Black Americans with light skin made me correlate this with an XCOR class I took called Creole Louisiana. That class discussed how many light skin black people began to pass for white to get better opportunities, education, job, etc.

I wanted to look at Marilyn Frye's quote alittle bit more closely she uses a metaphor of a birdcage for people to demonstrate that it is not the singular aspect of oppression, but the combination of many barriers that makes restrictions.

    6. Egypt, and many uses of the term oppression in the West invoke this paradigm.

In the Old Testament, I remember that Jews were slaves in Egypt. For years, Israelites had been in Egypt for generations. The Pharaoh feared their presence. He feared that one day the Isrealites would turn against the Egyptians.

    7. In this chapter I explicate each of these forms of oppression. Each mayentail or cause distributive injustices, but all involve issues of justice beyonddistribution. In accordance with ordinary political usage, I suggest that op-pression is a condition of groups. Thus before explicating the meaning of op--

The purpose of shedding light on this is to realize that every oppressed group experiences injustice. How does a person effectively examine a social group to understand the oppression that one may be experiencing? Because someone who does not identify as a part of that social group cannot fully relate.

    8. oppres

When looking at the word oppressed, I think of the abuse of power or authority. I look closely at how the people in black and brown communities have been oppressed, demeaned and degraded.

    9. have proposed an enabling conception of justice.Justice should refer not only to distribution, but also to the institutional conditions necessary for the development and exercise of individual capacities and collective communication_ and cooperation. Under this conception of justice, injustice refers primanly to two forms of disabling constraints, oppression and domination. While these constraints include distributive patterns, they also involve matters which cannot easily be assimilated to the logic of distribution: decisionmaking procedures, division of labor, and culture. Many people in the United States would not choose the term "oppres

In this text, it makes me want to put an emphasis on justice in the light of distribution because of the political theorist John Rawls. Rawls believed that all people should have equal rights, he states "first, they are to be attached to offices and positions open to all under conditions of fair equality of opportunity; and second, they are to be to the greatest benefit of the least-advantaged members of society."

This meant that all people even the least-advantaged members of society should have equal rights and distributions.
