    1. but what else is there to do when you are alone for days in the dull monotony of a narrow jail cell other than write long letters, think strange thoughts, and pray long prayers?

This seems very poetic for our own society. In a literal sense Dr. King is being imprisoned and has no choice but to pray and hope things will be better. Yet how is that any different for the people scared to leave their house, in fear that they may be attacked just for the color of their skin.

    2. ppressed people cannot remain oppressed forever. The urge for freedom will eventually come.

Do you truly think all people will be free? I agree everyone has the urge to be free and that we all deserve to be free, yet do you think we can truly achieve that utopian society where we are all equal.

    3. groups are more immoral than individuals.

A single person doesn’t start racism by going outside and yelling his opinions. It starts by these individuals whispering and gossiping to each other about others. After so many people join in on it these whisper turn into shouts that then cause the segregation in America.

    4. Too long has our beloved Southland been bogged down in the tragic attempt to live in monologue rather than dialogue.

This quote is very powerful, because it shows how in these southern states only white people can truly practice their right to free speech. While minorities are silenced and don’t get listened to by those in power, who just so happen to be white people.

    5. Birmingham is probably the most thoroughly segregated city in the United States. Its ugly record of police brutality is known in every section of this country.

Where you protesting in Birmingham or where you put in jail their, because the cops and judges knew how harsh it is down there. Also is there as much segregation inside the prison as there is outside.

    1. having restricted access to healthy foods also makes it harder for them to manage diabetes once they are diagnosed. [15]

I wish they would say what they mean by “healthy food”. Obviously I know fruits and vegetables are healthy, but what are their thoughts on meat. I eat a minimum of 4 meals of meat a day and even though they say that’s “too much red meat” I’d say I’m healthier then 90% of the population. Also another thought is how many of these obese people have active lifestyles. Is there a thing called a gym desert, because if people wanted to lose weight you need both a good diet and a good exercise program.

    2. While unhealthy eating may be economically cheaper in the short-term,

I disagree that going out to Mcdonals is cheaper then going to the store. I can go to the store and buy 6lb of chicken for $8 while a Large Quarter Pounder with fries and a drink is also around $8.

    3. that white neighborhoods contain an average of four times as many supermarkets as predominantly black ones do,

I feel like the reason that upper middle class white neighborhoods have more selection, is because of the over priced supermarkets that their are such as Whole Food, Sprouts, etc. Most communities wouldn’t bother going there, because the groceries are obviously over priced and going to those grocery stores seem to be more of social statement that people like to post on the Gram.

    4. heart disease kills more blacks every year than whites [18] (despite the fact that whites make up almost 80 percent of the total US populace, and blacks comprise slightly more than 13 percent).

A very surprising statistic that I never would’ve know until reading the article. It just goes to show that some communities are given privileges that others don’t have. It’s something that needs to change.

    5. Whatever their age, obesity puts people at a greater risk for serious, even fatal health disorders (particularly coronary heart disease and diabetes, [7] the first and seventh leading causes of death in the US respectively):

A common third world problem is obesity. If we don’t have healthier food chains to offer it can effect our society negatively. Giving kids a much higher risk of heart disease and other health problems.

    6. contain an overabundance of fast food chains selling cheap “meat” and dairy-based foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt.

Wealth shouldn’t be a determination factor on ones health. All communities should have access to healthy food, not cheap foods to feed their family.

    1. That's the story we should be teaching our kids. They should be learning about why native people reached that point, rather than this nonsense that native people willingly handed off their country to the invaders.

Sadly I don’t think we’ll ever start teaching the truth to little kids about how America started. As less and less native families grow America will proceed to just brush off their past history as side like nothing happened

    2. There's this tendency to see the English as the devils in all of this.

I think it’s fair thing to say that these early settlers had vile intentions and knew what they were doing. They never tried to have a real discussion about getting the native peoples land. The only deal English were gonna take would be one where it benefits them and hurts the natives

    3. It’s bloodless and in many ways an extension of the ideology of Manifest Destiny.

The thanksgiving dinner is just a way of early settlers to use euphemism and not seeming so terrible for taking native peoples land.

    1. The data also showed the maternal death rate among women 40 and older was 81.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, almost eight times the number for women under 25.

I’m not really sure how pregnancies fully work, but if woman are older wouldn’t they be more prone to dying in child birth just due to age itself a

    2. In 21st century America, in the richest and most powerful nation on Earth, no woman should ever die from pregnancy and childbirth: 658 deaths are 658 too many,

I agree that one death is too many, but I thinks it’s wrong to blame hospitals and doctors for a death. I’m sure they are trying everything they can to keep a woman and her child alive.

    3. Studying maternal deaths in general can be challenging -- even "messy,"

I can see how deciding which pregnancy deaths should “count”m because it kind of dehumanizes a women just based of their age, which is wrong.

    4. The data also showed the maternal death rate among women 40 and older was 81.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, almost eight times the number for women under 25.

Obviously I’m no master on how pregnancies work, but I feel like it makes sense that if you’re older you’re more prone to complications, because your body doesn’t function as well compared to when you were 20.
