I also have a problem with being critical because I don't want my words to sound hurtful or obnoxious.

Except you don't just take on the role of The Nice Roommate or The Ever-faithful Friend and tell her what she wants to hear.
I have a bad tendency of doing this because I'm not always good with picking up mistakes in writing.

Be reluctant at first even to say what you would do if the paper were yours. It's not yours. Again: Writers write, readers read and show what they're understanding and maybe make suggestions.
I found this to be very true and something that many need to hear. We are not all going to be good at grading papers, but we at least have to try our best to be constructive yet, encouraging. Their writing is their writing and all a reader can do is suggest rather than demand.

The dictionary had a picture of it, a long-tailed, long-eared, burrowing African mammal, which lives off termites caught by sticking out its tongue as an anteater does for ants.
This creates a picture in my mind of what an aardvark looks like. I actually don't know off the top of my head what it looks like, so being able to have a little bit of understanding shows that the sentence was put together well.

This one was important to highlight. I believe you can relate what was said earlier about him never being so free before. I can picture the power of this newfound education waking him out of slumber like a volcano.

This one really put a picture into my mind on how the books were that he had access to. Right off the bat the word "ancient" describes the books well, but after that he continues to add more detail.
