    1. You're not the writer; you're a reader. One of many. The paper is not yours; it's the writer's. She writes. You read. She is in charge of what she does to her writing. That doesn't mean you can't make suggestions. It doesn't mean you can't offer a few sample rewrites here and there, as models. But make it clear they're samples, models. Not rewrites. Not edits. Not corrections

      When one attempts to annotate someones work either they get too scared to make any suggestions or they are too harsh in their criticism. The reading above creates and paints a nice grey area for readers to follow when they annotate.

    1. My homemade education gave me, with every additional book that I read, a little bit more sensitivity to the deafness, dumbness, and blindness that was afflicting the black race in America

      He believed that because his education was primary from himself he was able to form his own beliefs and opinions to the things he was reading. his self education, blinded him from "deafness and dumbness...that was afflicting the black race in America." his use of word choice puts so much importance on what separated his type of education from black society in America.

    2. my reading of books, months passed without my even thinking about being imprisoned. In fact, up to then, I never had been so truly free in my life.

      These book's gave him an escape from the reality he was living in and also allowed him to educate him which made himself feel free as he states " I never had been so truly free in my life". This point of his life when people go to a movie to escape the outside world for a while, reading books made him forget about being in prison, books opened a new world for him, a new world that would change his life forever and the lives of people who knew of him.

    3.   In my slow, painstaking, ragged handwriting, I copied into my tablet everything printed on that first page, down to the punctuation marks.

      The use of strong visual and descriptive words used emphasizes how hard and slow it was for him to write these words in his tablet, but also show just how determined he was to face something new head first. I think thats a large testament to who he was as a person.
