The accounting improprieties resulted in Kraft reporting inflated adjusted "EBITDA," a key earnings performance metric for investors. In June 2019, after the SEC investigation commenced, Kraft restated its financials, correcting a total of $208 million in improperly-recognized cost savings arising out of nearly 300 transactions.
I found this interesting because it shows how important accurate financial statements are when evaluating a company and everything should be transparent. Investors use financial information to determine how a company is performing and whether or not to invest. Kraft Heinz reported inflated adjusted EBITDA because some of its supplier discounts weren't recorded. This could make the company look more profitable than it actually was. This is one reason why investors cannot just look at a company's stock price, but also need to understand the financial records thoroughly.
