    1. Miracles are, in fact, the common coin of Sufi hagiography. They occur in a vast variety of forms, ranging between relatively simple instances of knowing the past or the future, and spectacular performances that can transform the material world.

The idea that miracles are a common coin of Sufi hagiography tells me that it's been an ancient teaching and something referenced for a long time. Miracles would occur in many forms which I personally think is a very powerful fact because that means anybody could experience one. There is a miracle story within the past, present and future. It's apart Islamic history and how people's beliefs are shaped.

    1. But the metaphorical wording deserves closer attention because of the way it wrongly personifies the past into an agent that acts upon the world.

The speaker is saying that the metaphorical wording is incorrectly personifying the past and deserves much closer attention because of this. This particular quote spoke to me because of it's take on the metaphorical wording and how it should be handled. Whenever something is misinterpreted throughout history because of the choice of wording, it's always unfortunate so I find this quote very helpful.

    1. My ability to share images of the paintings of the Garrett Zafarnama with you in this book is utterly contrary to the use for which they were intended.

This quote really stood out to me because of the author's ability to talk directly to the reader and be so personal with them. I like the idea that the author is merely sharing images of the paintings because it makes it more personal to the reader. I thought this was a really nice touch and allowed for more understanding from the reader's perspective.

    1. The healed woman is presented as celebrated and powerful. But she acts only among women and also becomes wife to a man of prestige and mother to his child.

This quote interested me because you would think that describing a healed woman would only directly correlate to her and her wellbeing. However, the next quote is describing her impact to society as being amongst other women and also becoming a wife to a man of prestige. "Why can't she just exist on her own?" is what I think when I read this quote.

    1. n this setup, losing one’s mother as an infant was a severe setback since it meant losing one’s home before puberty and having reduced contact with maternal kin.

I think this is a common thought when it comes to mother or maternal figures in the early life of a child. Losing someone of such importance isn't good. This quote is really well worded and gives an important perspective on how the child may feel.

    1. In modern times, Islam has been fictionalized in a less deferential vein as well, through satire and other forms of trenchant critique regarding religious beliefs and their worldly effects.

I find this quote interesting because the author is calling out how modern times tends to fictionalize and not take as seriously Islam and it's history. There aren't a lot of moments in this text that sort of "call out" or critique the modern times and their feelings towards religious beliefs.

I think this is something I'd actually like to see more within the text or just overall, within everyday life. The idea of fictionalizing a religious belief is highly disrespectful but it does happen more often than not.

    1. She states that as a child, she once came home with swollen feet after having been punished by her Quran teacher. When her grandmother asked her what infraction had led to the punishment, she had barely begun to respond by saying that she wanted to say something to the teacher when the grandmother interrupted her:

I found this quote to be very sad. I'm sure the Quran teacher didn't have to punish her to the point where her feet are swollen. In the quote below this one, the Grandmother's thoughts are being explained saying that she committed a very grave fault. I disagree with this. I also don't think her Grandmother should have interrupted her.
