    1. In my community, grandmothers are the proud keepers of our stories and cultures, and I wanted my girls to learn and embrace our rich Maasai culture. Today, grandmothers do story time with the girls, and it’s a beautiful way our community remains connected.

I can really relate to this. In my culture, our grandmothers are the best at story telling. The stories they tell are their lives, their sufferings, their moments of joy and through their stories they offer words of wisdom. They are never wrong with anything that they say! We carry that on to our own children and they will embrace it to their own. It makes you see life differently.

    2. At my first enrollment, I had hoped for 10 girls. 100 came.

Sometimes we may think "it's just an idea or a thought", but that idea can change so many lives and have a positive impact. There are many people out there who go through rough paths and don't have the right guidance or support team, we can be their voice and show them the way.

    3. To empower girls, you need to educate them. That was my dream. And so I built a school, and in the process, I learned something much bigger. When you empower a girl, you transform a community. School is just a start.

I agree 100%. Girls (and boys) are what the future depends on. In order to become someone, hold a degree, or make a change there needs to be education behind it all. A community is stronger if school is in the mix. If you think about it, we wouldn't want to live in a community where there were no doctors, where would we take our children if they get sick? School is definitely just the start, but it's the start to a brighter future for ourselves and families. It opens up life changing opportunities.

    1. All being discarded, perfectly edible, because they’re the wrong shape or size.

Makes no sense when there are people out there who would be extremely grateful and humbled to have what we call "waste" and because their not the "correct" shape is just absurd. It's crazy to think how our "trash" can be someone's treasure. When there is division between societies for example, by class, the upper or richest class easily decides for those below them. Taking away privilege's that a human should not have the authority to.

    2. Can I have a show of hands if you have a loaf of sliced bread in your house? Who lives in a household where that crust — that slice at the first and last end of each loaf — who lives in a household where it does get eaten? Okay, most people, not everyone, but most people, and this is, I’m glad to say, what I see across the world, and yet has anyone seen a supermarket or sandwich shop anywhere in the world that serves sandwiches with crusts on it? (Laughter) I certainly haven’t. So I kept on thinking, where do those crusts go? (Laughter) This is the answer, unfortunately: 13,000 slices of fresh bread coming out of this one single factory every single day, day-fresh bread. In the same year that I visited this factory, I went to Pakistan, where people in 2008 were going hungry as a result of a squeeze on global food supplies. We contribute to that squeeze by depositing food in bins here in Britain and elsewhere in the world. We take food off the market shelves that hungry people depend on.

I must say I wasn't paying much attention to the video until I heard this! After all the sandwiches I've eaten at restaurants in my lifetime I've never not once thought what happens to the end slices. My family comes from a country where tourism is great but their poverty rates are insanely high. I've seen what hungry children go through. What a suffering mother because she has nothing to give her child looks like. It's a devastating situation. and it's an image that never goes away.

    3. As a country gets richer, it invests more and more in getting more and more

I one hundred percent agree with this statement! The more rich someone is the more ambitious they can become. In this case, the more a country has, the idea of having more becomes a number one priority or is seen as normal. This can have advantages and disadvantages to the society. It's a tricky situation because a country does need to grow economically in order to be a "successful" country however, because they are busy growing the economy they leave out the main priorities like, decreasing poverty, coping with hunger and violence. Sadly, it's not a win, win situation.

    1. Economic growth seems to have really helped in the fight against poverty, but it doesn’t seem to be having much impact on trying to get to the Global Goals. So what’s going on?

I think the problem is people assume that the only way to lend someone in need a hand is by giving them money. Like I said before money is just temporary aid and when it’s all gone the door opens up again for poverty that’s why we never advance as a whole. Were stuck in the same position each time and our minds easily get use to temporary changes not giving room for long-term changes.

    2. Even a flood tide of economic growth is not going to get us there

Not even a flood tide.. many have a mindset that money resolves issues. In my opinion, money is just temporary help, kind of like the stimulus checks we received. For some it most likely disappeared in seconds and then everything went back to “normal” as if nothing happened. The only way a positive impact could take into action is if we all learn to act with compassion and integrity. Making changes in our communities would be a good start, working our way up con conquer the country.

    3. Do you think the world is going to be a better place next year? In the next decade? Can we end hunger, achieve gender equality, halt climate change, all in the next 15 years?

We’ve all heard the phrase, “make the world a better place to live in” and it’s easier said then done. I honestly don’t think things will change for the better anytime soon. Yes, anything is possible and no I’m not trying to be negative but, for a change this drastic to occur it requires the whole country, the entire world to be on the same page and have the desire to first change their contradicting views.

    1. We, therefore, pledge to do all that we can, knowing we’ll fail on occasion, to restore compassion to the center of our lives (at least in this course and during this semester) and attempt to engage with our colleagues in this course with compassion. This means we will work to think first of others, their benefit, their well-being, and their learning, knowing that others are compassionately working for our benefit. We will strive to see our interdependence and interconnectedness, and labor for one another.

It's easy to say "I'll try my best or I'll give it my all" then halfway through the process we easily fail or fall back. A problem isn't a problem until many disagree. Working together to find a solution will be of better worth. It's important to analyze our peers point of view, we all see things differently and can learn from one another.

    2. Being compassionate is not only being kind to someone. Being compassionate is understanding and acknowledging a situation with respect and honesty. It's not only demonstrated when we speak, but through our actions, thoughts and feelings.

    3. The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical, and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the center of our world and put another there, and to honor the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity, and respect.

Be kind to one another or treat others the way you want to be treated are both phrases we've heard since kindergarten. However, as the years go by violence and discrimination crush those old sayings. It's important to honor and respect one another, this will help the world become a better place to live in. The word compassion is sometimes underestimated. Many don't realize the positive impact it can have on someone. Compassion unites.
