Desolate, deserted land; people have left maybe in search of land with new resources to exhaust.

It is easy to forget in the winter, everything that snow covers ceases to exist until springtime.

But sound of water over a rock
Water seems to be a recurring theme in all of the books. He talks about the lack of water or tainted water, "the river sweats oil and tar..."; water that cannot sustain.

He likens the dead wings of the moth to a kite because in the spiders grasp, the moth is limp. Like a kite that has not caught a breeze, and withers and falls to the ground.

dignified
Being in the limelight can cause some people to crack under the pressure and act out in undignified manners. But an early death might prevent that from happening and it's likely that they'd be surrounded by more loved ones at a younger age.

I feel as though it is saying that the stars of Hollywood too often become 'has beens' but that dying young will almost immortalize somebody. That they will be eternally youthful or there will be one role that will never escape the minds of observers.

This makes me think of Shakespeare, "A rose, by any other name, would smell just as sweet." I think he is trying to say that everything is relative, "Life all around me here in the village," there are patterns to life that are all relative.

As in Native American. He is speaking about returning home when really his home had to be taken from someone else, the natives.

He is speaking of these people he found upon coming back, living the same lives as when he left and are discontented knowing their lives are unchanging.

Almost like she's saying she was trapped behind the wall paper and now she can no longer be imprisoned.

Feels like an internal conflict. Wanting to have, feeling like he should have, the same opportunities but only being able to see himself through the eyes of white men.

historians would probably reply, with one voice, that they had never supposed themselves required to know what they were talking about.
Ironic because historians are responsible for knowing important past events, but this knowledge doesn't always represent true understanding.
