    1. I couldn't tell him the rest: that I had not wanted the boy to walk me home, that I didn't want someone with such nice shoes to see where I lived.

It seems to me that Dina also feels this way with her fellow students at Yale. She doesn't want them to see who she is or where she's from.

    2. "Soft packs remind me of you," she said. "Just when you've smoked them all and you think there's none left, there's always one more, hiding in that little crushed corner."

This quote of Heidi descirbing the main character stood out to me a lot. She seems to see her as someone who is hiding in a corner, maybe even hiding from herself, which we later come to find is the truth. I like that the author decided to put this in here and that they put it in Heidi's point of view.

    3. With this, she put a jovial arm around my neck. I continued walking, a little stunned. Then, just as quickly, she dropped her arm and stopped walking. I stopped, too."Did you notice that I put my arm around you?""Yes," I said. "Next time, I'll have to chop it off.""I don't want you to get sick," she said. "Let's eat at Commons."In the cold air, her arm had felt good.

This is the first moment that I started to realize that the main character might have feelings for Heidi. The author does a really good job of describing our main character in such away that this interaction actually surprised me.

    1. knew him.He came toward me, smiling, and shook me by the hand, saying, "It's a long timesince we last met—how are you?"With a nod of my head, I agre

In reading and rereading this story, I find myself continuously perplexed and curious about who this middle-aged man is supposed to be. He says to the main character, an old man at this point as we later come to find out, that it had been a while since they had last met. The only conclusion I am able to come to is that it may not matter who this man is, just that the main character knows deep down that he does know the man, but the passage of time has not been kind to him and therefore he is not able to place him. I'm curious what anyone else has to say about who this man might have been or if knowing who he is would matter to the story.

    2. louded as we had presumed. Dust-laden winds and unexpected accidents cameabout suddenly, so we had to be

This quote from the story, "As our path revealed itself to us, however, we did not find it as totally sweet and unclouded as we had presumed," is not only speaking of the character's time in school. I believe that it is talking about his life (and life in general) as a whole. As we continue along each of our own paths and lives, we may come to realize that not everything is as perfect as we may have wished or expected. This is very true and one of my favorite quotes from this story.

    3. Let the fire take its pleasure in

I think that this quote, "Let the fire take its pleasure in what it consumes," has a deeper meaning in the context of this story. The fire that the character refers to, in my opinion, is time. By making a connection between the two, time can be seen as something that is fast-paced and maybe even a bit destructive. The jump from the main character's childhood to his much later life also reflects this, and the fact that he is so confused may indicate the destructive effects of time on his mind.

    1. And I don’t realize that his hand is sliding down the back of my neck until he is trying to loop his fingers through the ribbon. I gasp and pull away quickly, falling back and frantically checking my bow.

Each time that her husband tries to undo her bow it just made me angrier and angrier. The fact that he waited until their most intimate moments to betray her the most just feels like a perfect metaphor for the way our society has treated women throughout the years.
