    1. It is because I feel a deep and tender interest in your present and eternal welfare that I am willing thus publicly to address you.

Angelina Grimke definitely felt passionate on how she felt about slavery. She was often criticized about it and separated her idealistically from even your family. This is like the warning to the topic, it may be sensitive and you can tell it a touchy topic because she is trying to illustrate the uncomforting that she is facing that is in the hand of all her sisters (Women, often white women).

    2. Yes! Sisters in Christ I feel an interest in you, and often has the secret prayer arisen on your behalf, Lord “open thou their eyes that they may see wondrous things out of thy Law”—It is then, because I do feel and do pray for you,

This has got to be the modern day kill them with kindness. Sure she is being persuasive and attempting to get all women on the movement realizing how powerful women can be with a collective voice. I stated before that in the second great awakening the role of the women in a family was robust.

    1. And from the first steps of righteousness until the last, was I made perfect; and the Holy Ghost was with me, and said, “Behold me as I stand in the Heavens”

Kind of off topic but related to the unit. Nat Turner prophet like mindset is very similar to Tecumseh brother that we previously covered. They were known for there prolific words that touched many. In this part he is saying that his actions were of the spirit and necessary.

    2. For as the blood of Christ had been shed on this earth, and had ascended to heaven for the salvation of sinners,

This part of the confession made me realize how much slaves were effected by the Great Awakening. Nat Turner was clearly a different person but he clearly demonstrates some type of relation to religion etc.

    3. and I looked and saw the forms of men in different attitudes—and there were lights in the sky to which the children of darkness gave other names than what they really were—for they were the lights of the Savior’s hands, stretched forth from east to west, even as they were extended on the cross on Calvary for the redemption of sinners. And I wondered greatly at these miracles, and prayed to be informed of a certainty of the meaning thereof—and shortly afterwards, while laboring in the field, I discovered drops of blood on the corn as though it were dew from heaven

What a visionary that's going on in his head to be able to describe what is going on in his head. Something so powerful and good in his eyes wasnt so holy if we think to the terms that that word carries today. He says drops of blood on the corn as though it were dew from the heavens. HE IS SAYING THE HEAVENS WERE DROPPING BLOOD ON THE CORNFIELD!!!! If that isnt scary enough in this confession that I really dont know what is.

    1. heart of man which will bend under moral suasion.

I cant help but to notice that this is all during the Second Great Awakening right? This is the time where the shift of morality in a household from a man, to women. The women of the household really molded the family and was looked at highly. Maybe Angelina is trying to say a man can not feel the same way a women can? Men are more heartless while women are more morally correct. Very Interesting!

    2. It is even a greater absurdity to suppose a man can be legally born a slave under our free Republican Government, than under the petty despotisms of barbarian Africa.

Pointing out the obvious. If the Bill of Rights guarantees all its citizens of the land basic rights and liberties why must they look at slaves practically as non human or equal to the white race.

    3. You must take it up on Christian ground, and fight against it with Christian weapons, whilst your feet are shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.

What comes into my head is her approach is very peaceful and remindful of the word of gospel. Taking a more Christian approach on Christian ground. Meaning the world is Gods creation and on on Christian ground fight against it with Christian weapons (USE YOUR VOICE).

    4. The women of the South can overthrow this horrible system of oppression and cruelty, licentiousness and wrong. Such appeals to your legislatures would be irresistible, for there is something in the heart of man which will bend under moral suasion.

She is trying to point out how women in the South, particularly white women had a certain amount of immunity towards unfavorable actions as far as reprocautions that lets say for example a black slave, man or women does not have. With this power she illustrates basically that they cant stand up for something if the hearts really believed something is wrong as Angelina Grimke did.

    1. The Spirit that spoke to the prophets in former days

Nat Turner sought himself to be a Prophet and a man of good spirituality. He referred to himself often times as the black Moses. He is comparing himself to a Moses or Ibrahim, or a John in the bible and how they were messengers of God, and the same spirits give him messages.

    2. Several years rolled round, in which many events occurred to strengthen me in this my belief.

During this time turner continues to push his belief like a true prophet and believer of the holy spirit. It is a time of progression for Turner and the wise words and prophecy he is spreading is starting to get noticed. In this time for Turner think of it has a rolling snowball down a hill and it continues to grow and grow before it gets to its final destination. Ultimately we know it brought him death but significantly changed slavery all across the United States. Towards the end of the 19th century more and more states abolish slavery. Nat Turners was definitely a start to all of this.

    3. and when the white people would not let us be baptised by the church, we went down into the water together, in the sight of many who reviled us, and were baptised by the Spirit—After this I rejoiced greatly, and gave thanks to God.

He is explaining how happy he is in uniting as slaves to go and get baptized. So rebellious and brave and the way he talks is so evangelistic. A true prophet! So sure with his words and thankful to the powerful spirit in the event that occurred.

    4. I was struck with that particular passage which says : “Seek ye the kingdom of Heaven and all things shall be added unto you.” I reflected much on this passage, and prayed daily for light on this subject—As I was praying one day at my plough, the spirit spoke to me, saying “Seek ye the kingdom of Heaven and all things shall be added unto you.”

I think in this particular section of the reading Nat Turner is trying to justify his actions with scriptures in the bible or a religious book of some sort. I am sure the built up anger and frustration of being an enslaved African American played a factor in his actions but I also thought of this time period in the 19th century as well. It was the time of the second Great Awakening and that probably was a significant factor.

    1. And now you have an extraordinary opportunity, a day wherein Christ has flung the door of mercy wide open, and stands in the door calling and crying with a loud voice to poor sinners; a day wherein many are flocking to him, and pressing into the kingdom of God;

You have the choice to choose the path of God, or be left behind. Christ is open to all sinners meaning all who have sinned have a chance at REBIRTH, which ultimately what this sermon is talking about. A day when many flock to him, emphasizing the many who are poor sinners as he states coming into the kingdom of God. He really is persuasive. I can only imagine what it felt like live. He wasn't a evangelist type that we are common to now days, or like George Whitefield but hearing this live must have been intense. You got to think of it as if you are in that time. Must have been scary.

    2. Are not your souls as precious as the souls of the people at Suffield,7 where they are flocking from day to day to Christ?

What he is trying to emphasize is that you must not really care about your own self to not convert over to Christ when everyone you know is going to him.

    1. Consider this, you that are here present, that yet remain in an unregenerate state. That God will execute the fierceness of his anger, implies that he will inflict wrath without any pity… you will be a vessel of wrath fitted to destruction; and there will be no other use of this vessel but only to be filled full of wrath: God will be so far from pitying you when you cry to him, that ’tis said he will only laugh and mock

This is actually not to far from King James version. I think this is stating you follow the right path early you will be OK, but those who do not follow the path of the Lord will be filled full of wrath, meaning when disasters strikes and you choose the wrong path willingly, God will mock and laugh ignoring the help you seek because you did not choose earlier. Disregard Gods advice and you shall feel the regret!

    2. And you children that are unconverted, don’t you know that you are going down to hell, to bear the dreadful wrath of that God that is now angry with you every day, and every night? Will you be content to be the children of the devil, when so many other children in the land are converted, and are become the holy and happy children of the King of kings?

Just wow in my opinion. This whole piece of work really makes you think of the power religion had at the time and particularly in this part of the reading, he faults and antagonize children who wont follow God and basically calls them children of the devil. How can you sleep with God angry with you, Thats pretty deep.

    3. The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect, over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked; his wrath towards you burns like fire

The graphic image is intensively powerful dont you think. you get goosebumps just creating that image in your brain and the strength in the meaning. I always have felt like pieces of work like sermons, bibles and other religious and non religious bodies of work are more powerful before than they are now. Could it potentially be because we are a more visualistic society now with technology etc.
