The salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; he is their stronghold in the time of trouble.40The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.

Mark the blameless and behold the upright, for there is a future for the man of peace.

Wait for the LORD and keep his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land; you will look on when the wicked are cut off.

Turn away from evil and do good; so shall you dwell forever.28For the LORD loves justice; he will not forsake his saints.They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.29The righteous shall inherit the land and dwell upon it forever.

Better is the little that the righteous has than the abundance of many wicked.17For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous.

In just a little while, the wicked will be no more; though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there.11But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.

The phonologic infor-mation then directs decisions at the phonetic level, where the details of the sound pattern are worked out. We might think of the phonetic level as producing a detailed phonetic representation of the utterance.

The phonologic level in Figure 2.1 is the level at which the evolving sentence comes to have phonologic structure. Various decisions are made at this level to ensure that a sound pattern accurately represents the syntactic and semantic decisions made earlier.

Syntax involves the ordering of words in a sentence, and semantics involves the selec-tion of words. Research on verbal formulation indicates that syntactic and semantic processing is interactive (hence, the arrows between them in the diagram). Deciding on a particular syntac-tic structure for a sentence can influence word selection, and selection of particular words can limit or direct syntactic decisions.

If two sounds can be interchanged without changing word meaning, or if they never occur in exactly the same combination with other sounds, then they are not different phonemes. Hence, pho-nemes are the minimal sound elements that represent and distinguish language units (words or morphemes).

Speech sounds, then, may be viewed from two perspectives: (1) as motor production (speech) and (2) as units that facilitate the expression of meaning (language). When sounds are studied as part of the language system, they are called phonemes.To derive a speaker’s meaning, the listener is basically concerned with the phonemes in the speech message. From a linguistic perspective, phonemes are sound units related to deci-sions about meaning.

Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.[94]4Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.5Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.6He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.

For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light.

How long, O Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their destruction, my precious life from the lions!18I will thank you in the great congregation; in the mighty throng I will praise you.

Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.14Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.5Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.6This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.7The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.

The king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.17The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might it cannot rescue.

You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance.

I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity;I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.2Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.4For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up[84] as by the heat of summer.

Love the LORD, all you his saints! The LORD preserves the faithful but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.24Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the LORD!

Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear youand worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind!20In the cover of your presence you hide them from the plots of men;you store them in your shelter from the strife of tongues.

But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, “You are my God.”15My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!16Make your face shine on your servant; save me in your steadfast love!

Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eye is wasted from grief; my soul and my body also.10For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing;my strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones waste away.

You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness,12that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

Sing praises to the LORD, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name.[77]5For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime.[78]Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.

The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.11May the LORD give strength to his people! May the LORD bless[75] his people with peace!

Blessed be the LORD! For he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.7The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.8The LORD is the strength of his people;[71] he is the saving refuge of his anointed.9Oh, save your people and bless your heritage! Be their shepherd and carry them forever.

Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother's breasts.10On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother's womb you have been my God.

I believe[69] that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living!14Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!

One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after:that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life,to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire[66] in his temple.5For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble;he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.6And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me,and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy;I will sing and make melody to the LORD.

Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear;though war arise against me, yet[65] I will be confident.

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?The LORD is the stronghold[64] of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

O LORD, I love the habitation of your house and the place where your glory dwells.9Do not sweep my soul away with sinners, nor my life with bloodthirsty men,

Prove me, O LORD, and try me; test my heart and my mind.[63]3For your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in your faithfulness.

More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold;sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.

The law of the LORD is perfect,[45] reviving the soul;the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;8the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;9the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;the rules[46] of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.

You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your gentleness made me great

With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;26with the purified you show yourself pure; and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.27For you save a humble people, but the haughty eyes you bring down.28For it is you who light my lamp; the LORD my God lightens my darkness.

In my distress I called upon the LORD; to my God I cried for help.From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.

I love you, O LORD, my strength.2The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness.

Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,9from the wicked who do me violence, my deadly enemies who surround me.

You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you[8] and watch.

7You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound.8In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

Be angry,[7] and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent

But you, O LORD, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.4I cried aloud to the LORD, and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah5I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained me.
