we have to do this work no matter how wefeel about it.
Very true, however, it has been psychologically proven that when we are more optimistic we are more likely to produce positive outcomes.

the government is actively trying tomake citizens miserable; in Brave New World, the government was first trying to make its citizenshappy, but this backfired
I would agree that 1984 intended to cause misery but how did Brave New World intend to make citizens happy I thought that the whole point was to trick them?
e looming presence of climate change, as a kind of techno-social disaster that has already begun and which will inundate the next couple of centuries as somekind of overdetermining factor, no matter what we do.
I find it very scary because climate change is something that is actually real and the fear behind is supported because we see how climate change has already begun to change and affect the Earth.
fear as a cultural dominant
I recall hearing this in the pre-reading micro lecture. And it is remarkable that the idea of fear is so strong that it has the ability to even be a cultural dominant.
here are a lot of dystopias around these days, and this makes sense, because we have a lot of fears about the future.
I never thought about it this way, but it does make sense. I believe that we have fears about the future because the future is unknown and in fact the idea of the future thrives off of fear. Fear is based off of the "what if" and what "might" happen. This fear can either encourage people to do well for themselves by securing a stable job or a good career, find a good partner and marrying them, having kids, etc. By planning and executing the plan you are able to combat fear. But those who only focus on the negative are too blinded by it and cannot see the possibility that lie ahead.
it is the diagram of a mechanism of power reduced to its ideal form; its functioning, abstracted from any obstacle, resistance or friction, must be represented as a pure architectural and optical system
I believe that the Panopticon's design is a physical representation of the order intended to be in place of the prison system.
Treat “lepers” as “plague victims”, project the subtle segmentations of discipline onto the confused space of internment
It sounds as if "lepers" represent all of the people in society that have been forgotten and kind of stonewalled out. Such as homeless men, the mentally ill, the poor that rely on the government, minorities, etc. All of the people that have been excluded from our societies and treated as lesser than others are subconsciously often forgotten.
“in which respect the inhabitants will be compelled to speak the truth under pain of death”
"Pain of death" has been repeated multiple times throughout this reading. I believe it is intended to scare the residents into order and follow their rules. Or they will risk being exposed to contaminated residents and die a painful death. This parallels the prison system when dirty guards work with the prisoners, allowing them to beat other prisoners nearly to death and not report it.
thus allowing each person to receive his ration without communicating with the suppliers and other residents; meat, fish and herbs will be hoisted up into the houses with pulleys and baskets
I find it interesting how this parallels the prison system. The idea of each person to receive their own ration and restrict their access from speaking with other residents. It sounds similar to prisoners receiving a certain amount of food and being restricted in the amount of time they are able to eat it around the other residents before being placed back into their cells.
cannot both enjoy, they become enemies
This sad but very true on how competitiveness can cause conflict between two talented people. We see this occur in life everyday through job position, auditions for sport teams, plays and even during election seasons.
acknowledge many others to be more witty or more eloquent or
I agree with this. People often get caught up in their own ego and it can come off as being cocky. It’s one thing to be confident in oneself but you should never underestimate your opponent. Take David and Goliath for instance, Goaliah underestimated David due to his size and smaller build and not only lost the battle but ultimately lost his life as well.
the assurance that a law once made willnot be broken in favour of an individual. This implies nothing as to the ethical value of such a law.
We were just having this conversation in my psychotherapies class about how the only reason why people don't behave act out by slashing the tires of someone who upset them is because there are consequences. But what happens when people dont care about the consequences, feel that they are above the law or simply believe that the crime is just "worth it". I feel that we see this happen a lot in the community of New Orleans, as crime rates have increased. Crime hasd also seemed to increase all over the world as well. So are people just not afraid of the consequences anymore? And if so how does can we expect our future to look like as a result?
If we cannot remove allsuffering, we can remove some, and we can mitigate some:
I can relate this to the fact that sometimes we have to go through suffering in order to grow. As we heal the suffering is simply mitigated.
; no formal mechanisms of law or custom force them to work for that employer or any employer.
I would disagree. The of cost of living requires one to work. The cost of living is in regards to recieving one's basic needs: food, water, shelter, and health (physical and mental) require a person to do some type of work to be able to provide for themselves and simply getby otherwise they risk being homeless, sick, etc.. So while it may not be a law or "force" it is necessary. Working leads to earning money. Money is a secondary drive that is required to fulfill one's primary drives/ needs.
group affinity that one cannot define the meaning of group identity for oneself;
Prior to reading this I never really thought about the intricate relationship that being a group and an indivual has.
Theauthentic self is autonomous, unified, free, and self-made, standing apart fromhistory and affiliations, choosing its life plan entirely for itself
I love the concept of people being able to authethically be themselves however, indivudiality has been shown to be frowned upon throughout history as if being different is a negative concept. We're all different, I think people simply prefer to classify others into a group of some sort so that it can be easier and faster to understand them. Which is where oppression can come into play because both by grouping individuals into a "box" and judging them for being uniquely themselves can unconsciously and intentionally cause a person to inflict their own discriminations upon them.
specific practices and forms of association.
Social groups are also discriminated against by specific practices and forms of associations. Such practices may be true observations and knowledge, exaggerations of those observations and knowledge or simply stereotypes (or rumors) formed by one individual of the group that therefore on was used to incorrectly identify said group. I find this interesting because people tend to believe anything as long as it's negative.
for they are more fundamentally intertwined with theidentities of the people described as belonging to them.
This makes me think back to a short film that was added on Netflix a while ago called, Passing. It's the story of a fairly light-skinned Black woman who is able to "pass" for white in 1920s New York City. She does so is efforts to not be judged as the stereotypical Black woman and therefore be excluded for other social groups and life luxuries she desired.
,across individuallives in a multiplicity of ways that can entail privilege and oppression for thesame person in different respect
I can understand this for example, a Black lesbian woman and White lesbian woman would be treated differently because although they both fall into the same category of oppression and discrimination against LGBTQIA+ community, the White woman has priviledges in this world that a Black woman will never have.
-socialists, radical feminists, American Indianactivists, Black activists, gay and lesbian activists-oppression is a central category _of political discourse
While each group is affected by oppression and discrimination in this country, each groups agenda is catered to the way in which they are impacted by oppression. Which is why it's important that when such groups are discriminated against they don't just use the word "oppression" but rather give facts and examples to how oppression has negatively impacted them.
