I think this poem represents how a lot of Black people felt then, and even how some Black people may feel now. The thought is I fought for this country or I made a life in this country, and even though I am not welcome I am going to stay and fight because I belong here too. I think that like McKay states these thought somewhat give people strentgh to keep pushing.

I think that this poem is might be to reveal some homesickness within the narrator. Maybe it's for their homeland, but it could also be longing for a place they have never been able to go. It seems like they want to go to a warm tropical place but cannot for one reason or another.

Is this lan old saying? If not it is an interesting way to end her poem after talking about the burdens of marriage. Also, i think this poem speaks to many women of that time, and perhaps even now. sometimes marriage is not all it's cracked up to be and women have a lot of heavy lifting in the marriage. This has changed over time and women do not have to get married to be happy or deemed acceptable, but during this time it must have been hard for women to get their frustrations out without ridicule.
