    1. professional.

That's why people "co-switch" or in other words "speak white" because it is the way of speaking that is looked as as "professional." It will also come with respect more often than speaking how one actually speaks. The sad truth. Yet, again we can question the idea of "what is speaking white? or what makes that "professional"?

    2. Moreover, language ideologies sometimes lead teachers to assume that certain students aren't as smart as others based on the way they speak, which also impacts academic outcomes.

      yup

    3. For this man, the ideological linking of English and the US is so strong that he doesn't just demand that other people know English; he feels entitled not to have to even hear Spanish when in the US

It's actually disgusting that there are so many instances like these still taking place.

    4. By portraying speakers of the standard variety as smarter or more hardworking than the 'ignorant' and 'lazy' speakers of other varieties, the standard language ideology doesn't just favor the dominant group; it also portrays them as intellectually and morally deserving of higher status.

Again, what makes one better than the other? It's like what we all ways ask, what is it about the White man that makes him superior? who made him higher than the others? What makes one of a higher status ?

    5. symbolic domination to refer to dominant groups' ability to convince dominated groups that existing social hierarchies are fair and just, and they point to schools as a key place where this happens

This brought me back to the idea of last weeks reading, and if schools are actually teaching us what we need to know or what they want us to know?

    6. In other words, both socially dominant and dominated groups see hegemonic ideologies as natural and universal, or they don't even notice them (

Has it become a norm ?

    7. i.e. the notion that each nation is defined by single language and vice-versa)

can this be why some Spanish speaking countries or individuals find "Spanglish" as disrespectful?

    8. dominant groups speak as better than other ways of speaking,

What makes them better? what is it about the way that they speak that is automatically superior than the other?

    9. Further, language ideologies can vary from society to society and culture to culture.

hence why the way one speaks may not be the same as someone else, even if it is the same language.

    10. Where do these ideas come from and what assumptions undergird them? Why do people assign different kinds of social meaning to different languages and different ways of using language? How are these notions tied to broader social processes and how do they reproduce social hierarchies?

This instantly made me add the question of what makes one form of Spanish "proper" and not the other? Who makes up those "rules."

I agree here as well. It was not until I started taking Spanish courses, that I realized how improper the Spanish I am surrounded by is.

    2. Nacer y criarse en un hogar donde se habla Spanglish,más inglés que español, es difícil porque no se aprende el idioma correcto

I can agree with this 100%. When I was younger, my mom and I used to go to DR a lot, so I was much more fluent in Spanish. As i got older we stopped going as much, and in my house they speak Spanglish. With those two combined, by Spanish has gotten a bit rusty. I can still understand, but i do have trouble expressing myself the correct way.

    1. lthough I am more familiar with Spanish,I still feel distant

I sometimes also feel this way. I can understand Spanish completely, but I sometimes find it challenging to be able to express myself entirely in Spanish, which can sometimes make me feel disconnected.
