    1. Since we lack the gift of photosynthesis, we animals are destined by biology to be utterly dependent upon the lives of others

I think that this is something we have forgotten or twisted over time. Instead of viewing our relationship with other living things a dependency we look at them as our right. That we can take from them as much as we want because we are more advanced. I think that this is a very harmful way of thinking, and that we should be more considerate of our relationships with other things around us.

    2. The Honorable Harvest is a covenant of reciprocity between humans and the land.

I think this would be a great goal for mankind to reach for. It shows a respect for the earth that I feel like we lose more and more every year.

    1. You hang by a slender thread, with theflames of divine wrath flashing about it, and ready every moment to singe it, andburn it asunder;7

I think this perfectly encapsulates Edward's meaning behind what he's saying. He believes that God does not love us he simply tolerates and that, is the only thing that is saving our ungrateful, sinful selves from hell.

    1. I imagine if we acknowledged that everything we consume is the gift of Mother Earth, we would take better care of what we are given.

I agree with this statement. I feel like the more personal we get with a process the more we care about it. When we have the knowledge about how much work someone put into a meal it makes more grateful for it and more thankful towards the person made it. If more people perceived what we get from the earth as a gift and not a right, we may take greater care of it.

    1. As dialogue and common searching continue, there will be grow towards mutual understanding and a gradual uncovering of common concerns which will provide the basis for further research and discussion. Exactly what form that will take must be left to the future. What is important, as we have already stressed, is that the dialogue should continue and grow in depth and scope.

I like how the pope makes it clear that he want faith and science to work together in the long run. A lot of times it feels like both groups can be at odds with each other. The fact that he hopes for mutual understanding amongst both groups I feel is a mature step in the right direction for both groups.

    1. And concerning food, bear what you are able; but against that which is sacrificed to idols be exceedingly careful; for it is the service of dead gods.

I feel like while we don't really sacrifice food to idols anymore, we could generalize this much further in life. Even though literal idols are not really worshipped much anymore there are still things that can take their place like expensive merchandise from celebrities, products from what some might consider upper class or luxury companies. We should be careful with the recourses we are giving to someone who does not really care for us.

    1. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship–be it JC or Allah, be it YHWH or the Wiccan Mother Goddess, or the Four Noble Truths, or some inviolable set of ethical principles–is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive.

This segment stood out to me, because it's pretty much telling the truth. I've seen a lot of people become swallowed up by certain obsessions they've worshipped whether its money, fame, someone, or something else. People who don't follow some sort of ethical teachings whether it's religion or otherwise do tend to get swallowed up by whatever it is their obsession is. It's lesson just about everyone needs to learn.
