    1. not just Things are bad, but also We areresponsible for making them bad. And it’s hard not to notice that we’re not doing enough to makethings better, so things will get worse too

This is very interesting and true. I never looked at dystopian projects like this, I always just thought of it as something on the extreme side of the spectrum.

Although this is true, after looking at history and finding real-world dystopias, some of the fictions shown in movies are concepts not too far from reality.

    1. A real subjection is born mechanically from a fictitious relation. So it is not necessary to use force to constrain the convict to good behaviour, the madman to calm, the worker to work, the schoolboy to application, the patient to the observation of the regulations.

I'm not for sure what is meant by subjection. Does the author mean creation? I do agree that when one does not need to be forced to do the opposite of what they typically do.

I believe Hobbes is saying that men have no pleasure in keeping those around that don't impress them or surpass the standard they set for themselves. Man glorifies/is in competition with those who surpass them.

    1. At the same time we have been carefulnot to fall in with the prejudice that civilization is synonymous with perfecting, that it is the road toperfection pre-ordained for men.

Although Freud hasn't fallen into this prejudice, I do believe that it is true. Civilization has made things such as beauty, cleanliness, and order seem to be something that should be close to, if not, perfect. As a result of that, there's a stigma placed on men that they should be perfect in the categories that civilizations deem as important which in turn can create an unhappy person in the long run.

    1. Thus the mystery of capitalism arises: when everyone is formally free, how can there be class domination? W hy do class distinctions persist betweenthe wealthy, who own the means of production, and the mass of people, whowork for them? The theory of exploitation answers this question.

Companies will hire someone willing to work hard for the least amount of money they can give. However, when you're in the working class you don't realize you're being exploited because you earn something from your labor. The interesting thing about this is most people start in the same place (unless they come from a wealthy background) so almost everyone kind of experiences some job that has tried to exploit them in some way. However, although everyone works for money, some end up stuck in a loop living paycheck to paycheck while others (not many) get to grow and move to a different class. I don't believe that this result is solely from exploitation although it does play its role.
