Hue is one of the three elements of color, with the other two elements being value (how light or dark a color is) and saturation (how bright or dull a color is). It basically refers to a color's position on the color wheel. Red, blue, green, yellow, orange—these are all different hues.

The emotionalism theory places emphasis on the expressive qualities of an artwork. The communication between artwork and viewer is crucial.

Formalism dictates that art is good when it effectively uses the elements of art and principles of design. A formalist will concentrate solely on how an artwork looks–color, line, shape, and texture.

Many art theories have emerged to encompass the wide variety of ideas and opinions about what art is and what it should do. The search for one art theory to rule them all may be futile, but there are arguments to be made on all sides, and everyone has a favorite.

And in our lab at Lancaster University we are investigating how the use of and exposure to different languages changes the way we perceive everyday objects. Ultimately, this happens because learning a new language is like giving our brain the ability to interpret the world differently – including the way we see and process colours.

Different languages and cultural groups also carve up the colour spectrum differently.

Synaesthesia is often described as a joining of the senses – where a person can see sounds or hear colours. But the colours they hear also differ from case to case.

Besides our individual biological make up, colour perception is less about seeing what is actually out there and more about how our brain interprets colours to create something meaningful

Our views are still formed by complex influences, and perception is not divested from them. We could make numerous examples from contemporary art proving that perception is far from being rendered objective or unaffected by our personal standings.

Art styles had developed from a willed decision of an artist that casts his inspiration in visual form inside historical trajectories, and come as a coherent deformation in inherited traditions.

Science cannot replace politics. When we come to decide on policy, we have to take into account many interests and values, and since there is no scientific way to determine which interests and values are more important, there is no scientific way to decide what we should do.

For thousands of years food production relied on human labour, and about 90 per cent of people worked in farming. Today in developed countries this is no longer the case. In the US, only about 1.5 per cent of people work on farms, but that’s enough not just to feed everyone at home but also to make the US a leading food exporter. Almost all the farm work is done by machines, which are immune to disease. Lockdowns therefore have only a small impact on farming.

Why, then, has there been so much death and suffering? Because of bad political decisions.

En we weten dat als je langer naar iets kijkt, meer details je opvallen. Kunst is een manier van gericht kijken

‘Omdat kunst gelaagd is en door een kunstenaar gemaakt met een bepaald doel dat jij als kijker niet kent, weet je dus dat het een betekenis draagt. Die kun jij ontdekken. En de enige manier waarop dat kan is door heel goed te kijken. Alsof je in een soort doolhof staat waarin je op zoek gaat naar de sleutel. Die wetenschap dat er een sleutel is, maakt dus dat je bereid bent om beter te kijken.’

‘Artsen hebben de neiging om snel een patroon te herkennen en er betekenis aan toe te kennen. Kunst leert je objectiever te kijken en daarna pas te interpreteren.’

‘Kunst is zonder regels kijken, de context laten meewegen, de tijd nemen. Wetenschappelijk onderzoek laat zien: participanten zijn daarna beter in patroonherkenning, maar ze zijn ook empathischer en laten de context van de patiënt meer een rol spelen.’

Consumerism is a gross failure of imagination, a debilitating addiction that degrades nature and doesn’t even satisfy the universal human craving for meaning.
