    1. harsh treatment

Being treated harshly is hard to say or hard to talk about because you don't know if people will take it to heart. It's a difficult topic to talk about especially in a room full of people because you don’t know who has been through what. Maybe their relatives have been through those things. You just have to watch what you are saying overall. Talking to a person who has been through it...pretending I’m talking to Celie, that’s difficult because I don’t understand what she has been through because I have never been through it. If I do talk to someone like Celie, I would ask how she feels. If she isn’t ready to talk about this yet, then she shouldn’t be forced. Talking about this topic shouldn’t be forced to talk about. It’s the type of topic that should take time because there needs to be trust that builds between you and that person. Giving your full support is needed when you’re talking to people who has been through it or knows someone close to them who has been through it. These vulnerable people just want people there for them and when they see someone they adore, they look up to them as their escape route.

    1. you probably won't get this letter, either. I'm sure Albert is still the only one to take mail out of the box.

I still wonder why Albert is keeping Celie and Nettie from talking. It's not like they will turn on him. I feel as if Albert doesn't care about what Celie thinks or feels. Celie needs someone who actually cares about her. She can't live in a horrible situation anymore.

    1. That's it, say Shug. Pack your stuff. You coming back to Tennessee with me. But I feels daze. My daddy lynch. My mama crazy. All my little half-brothers and sisters no kin to me. My children not my sister and brother. Pa not pa

I called it from the beginning. This is a "normal" life for Celie. She was born and raised into this situation and I guess she feels as if when she leaves, a part of her will still remember the horrible things that Mr.__ did to her and his children. I feel as if going with Shug is better because maybe Celie can have a normal life for the rest of her life.

    1. I imagine that you really do get my letters and that you are writing me back: Dear Nettie, this is what life is like for me.

There is hope that Celie is writing back to Nettie. It's nice to know that Nettie cares about her sister but why can't she take Celie in, away from all the trouble. Nettie wants to know what is going on in Celie's life, hoping she is okay. But I think that Mr.__ don't let Celie see letters to her.

    1. What your real name? I ast her. She say, Mary Agnes.

Reading this book makes me feel like every time someone's name is revealed, it's a big deal. Like a gasping information. I just question why Celie gives Mary Anges a nickname like Squeak. Maybe she Squeaks a lot? Or maybe she's the mayor's wife???

    1. Squeak slap her up cross the head. What she do that for. Sofia don't even deal in little ladyish things such as slaps. She ball up her fist, draw back, and knock two of Squeak's side teef out. Squeak hit the floor. One toof hanging on her lip, the other one upside my cold drink glass. Then Squeak start banging on Harpo leg with her shoe.

Letter: Dear Sofia, If you don't know me, I'm the girl you punched. Not only I stumbled back but so did my brain and my feelings. Since you hurt me, I'll hurt you. Your punches are horrible. I know I slapped you first but you didn't had to punch. You could slap but nah. You want a bruise to be on my face. Let me remind you,Prizefighter is mine! M-I-N-E/ He says I am the better dancer than you are. So beat it. I tumble, you tumble. But I is stronger. Imma keep beatin you until you understand he is my dancer. Don't fight because you're awful at it. Love Squeak

    1. You've got to fight and get away from Albert. He ain't no good

I feel as if this type of thing is easy to say but not easy to do. Celie is still young so if she tries to do anything outrageous, Mr. ___ can catch her back and who knows what he will do to her? It's also nice to know that Nettie is concerned about Celie's safety and health. That's sisterly love right there.

    1. She stand there in her slip. She never blink a eye.

I feel as if this is a regular thing that goes on in the house but no one says anything because it is "normal." Being raised in this condition, in my opinion, is horrific to read about. To be honest, if someone were getting beat in front of me, I would be super scared. Celie doesn't seem scared, according to the context around it. So she's probably used to it...which is bad. It's bad for young adults to live in these conditions because it can affect their emotional and mental health.

    1. But I don't never git used to it. And now I feels sick every time I be the one to cook.

The first 42 pages of this book is super disturbing for me to read. I was reading the first coupple pages to my mom and we started talking about this problem and how kids were raised to this circumstance. They grow up thinking this isn't wrong. But Celie knows it's wrong...hopefully. This manner should be taken seriously because a lot of people are sensitive to this topic. This quote shows that Celie knows what Mr. ___ is doing wrong. But she's just trapped in the situation
