    1. And the twelfth stroke of midnight sounded; the twelfth stroke ofmidnight, Thursday, the eleventh of October, Nineteen hundred and TwentyEight.

For the first time in this novel (or as I believe so), Orlando is addressing the time. We have seen days, months and even decades have been skipped through while the biographer writes Orlando's story. However, in this chapter we see Orlando being aware of the clock hitting the hour marks. It highlights the literary style Stream of Consciousness where the character's thoughts and awareness is shown to the readers. Time is finally a factor for Orlando as she realizes or thinks about the presence. In addition, the Date October 11, 1928 was the first publication of the book Orlando. Therefore, Virginia Woolf connects it all to her present time when she was writing the novel.

    1. As the ninth, tenth, and eleventh strokes struck, a huge blacknesssprawled over the whole of London. With the twelfth stroke of midnight, the darkness was complete. A turbulent welter of cloud covered the city. All was darkness; all was doubt; all was confusion. The Eighteenthcentury was over; the Nineteenth century had begun

The clouds hovering over London could be used a symbol of darkness. The start of a whole new century perhaps indicates a change or a switch to a different era. The phrase "turbulent welter of cloud covered the city" struck me as an image in my head. I could imagine the clouds covering the city from a ray of sunlight; maybe it refers to the treatment of women or other setbacks that the city of London faced during that century. The turn of the century and the turbulent clouds can be seen as harbingers of impending downfall of the city.

    1. And I, most jocund, apt, and willingly,To do you rest a thousand deaths would die.

In this line, Viola shows us how passionate she is towards Orsino. She tells him she could die "a thousand deaths" to stress her emotions. The use of Hyperbole here emphasizes Viola's love and desire for Orsino and represents what she could do for him. In addition, I believe her use of words such as 'jocund' and 'willingly' characterizes her as an unselfish lover who is ready to sacrifice everything for love. It suggests that she will be happy in her after-life if Orsino can be at peace.
