    1. But that is not always the case; there are many famous (and long) novels where the narrative evolves over a very short span of time, for example a couple of hours or a day. In addition, a novel often has an extensive cast of characters, and the plot may take place in many different settings. There are a number of subgenres that will identify a novel more specifically, such as fantasy, romance, historical, or bildungsroman.

the nature of genres is not absolute and genre definitions are helpful. If a novel is long and complex, thus is not all that is. When considering how a novel works, I should consider plot extension, number of characters, setting changes, and subgenre.

    2. A novel is a work of fiction. This means that it is made up and not factual. Unlike the short story, it is NOT short: it usually focuses on many events and places as well as more characters than the short story. Also, the time span depicted in a novel is often longer than that of a short story.

In this section, I feel I have a better understanding of how the novel is not “a longer short story.” A novel allows for more time, space, events, places, characters and change. That additional room provides the writer with the opportunity to create more of a world and to see conflicts develop in more involved ways.

    1. One only has to see the proliferation of bookstalls at railway stations and airports, for example, and the predominance of novels over other forms of writing made available in such locations, to realize the appeal of fiction.

fiction is so popular not just because it entertains, but it allows the reader the opportunity to practice imagining other lives. Stories provide escape, but they can also help readers pose questions about their values. I should read fiction for entertainment — and, deeper understanding of ourselves, too.

    2. While nonfiction and creative nonfiction are true, fiction is not true. Fiction may chronicle real events that happened in a convincing way using verisimilitude, but for categorization purposes the literature is still fiction. For example, historical fiction adapts real events and historical figures into a compelling narrative. But even if 95% of the story is true, the 5% of imagination renders the narrative into fiction. Meanwhile, nonfiction and creative nonfiction must tell the truth. The flexibility in creative nonfiction comes in how the story is told. Fiction writers are not constrained by the truth in this way.

This section aids me to better differentiate fiction from creative nonfiction. Even though a fictional book may contain accurate historical information and/or realistic description, there is still room for invention. It is flexibility that is important because a story can be emotionally true, yet factually untrue; and nonfiction has a higher standard of truth, accuracy and intellectual honesty.
