    1. never able to identify where it's coming from

This line could possibly show that the author is so desperate to relive the past and enter his safe place that he hallucinates being able to smell a nostalgic scent to in order to continue his hunt of being able to go back.

    2. we have the same nose

The phrase "same nose" is a metaphor for how the persona and his brother had been raised in the very same place and they know and remember the scents of their past and childhood, conveying that only the persona's brother would understand what was the point of making the candle as they have the same background and experiences.

    3. mama sang us to sleep

The word "mama" shows the persona's definition of comfort and peace as he links it to "sang us to sleep" which shows his mother being a comforting figure towards the persona and how he associates the feelings of being able to relax and let go of their problems. I see the theme of comfort, as the persona's mother is a place for him to let his guard down and relax, without fear of feeling pressured.

    4. We used to play pretend, give each other different namesWe would build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far awayUsed to dream of outer space, but now they're laughing at our face saying"Wake up, you need to make money", yeah

The repetition of these lines depicts the persona's life from being a child to a teenager. Showing the things he has faced and how he was influenced by others to mature faster and leave behind his freedom to be enslaved by the rules of our world. This effect is meant to show how we force people to follow in our foot steps to become money focused and on their problems rather than taking a step back. I can see the theme of childhood and its freedom, as well as its negatives. As the children have limitless imagination to play and have fun but are also ridiculed because of their imagination by their friends

    5. We would build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far awayUsed to dream of outer space, but now they're laughing at our face saying"Wake up, you need to make money", yeah

This line is repeated to show the original argument between realism and imagination. This shows that the persona still cant decide between the 2 arguments as in his heart he still deeply agrees with both sides, they each state valuable sides to his life. One side wanting to rid himself of his misery and go back to his happy childhood while the other wants him to make do with what he has now and realise that the misery is something that he has to go through. This final repetition of this verse conveys the persona's acceptance to life and his past. That although he can dream of the past he has to deal with his present.

    6. now they're laughing at our face saying

This shows the persona's peers ridiculing him, calling his dreams childish and unrealistic. The word "now" shows that the persona's peers laugh at him because they matured faster than he did and now they labelled him as a kid although they used to dream the same dreams as him. The words "at our face" shows the cruelty of children and society that they do not care if it hurts the victims and they purposefully do this to try and stand above and look down on people. I can see the theme of society as people dislike others who are better or different from them so they purposefully pull them down to their level and put their dreams and admissions down.

    7. Wish

The repetition of the word "wish" connotes a sense of longing and sadness. The persona wants to relive and feel free from adulthood's stress and pressure. Yet this repetition shows the persona's own escapism of reminiscing to escape from reality and hope for a time where life was much simpler.

    8. But now we're stressed out

The emphasis on "But" forces us to be pulled back into the present from the flashback to show the sudden contrasts between then and now. "we're" shows that its not just the persona himself who hopes to go back to his past but others like him. The diction of the word "now" shows the inescapability of reality and that its inevitable. The phrase "we're stressed out" shows the pressure of adulthood and the different troubles and problems that they face on a a daily basis to do whatever they can to make to achieve something in life. I can see the themes of adult life and how it is very different and difficult compared to childhood as it comes with new sets of challenges that are even harder to face than the previous ones. I can see theme of resignation on how the persona has given up fighting his fears and stress and has begun to accept it as a part of himself.

    9. all my fears would shrink

The word "all" showed the persona's hope and belief that by growing up, he would no longer fear the things he once did as a child. The emphasis of "shrink" shows the author's disappointment of being lied to, but also foreshadows the twist that instead of fearing less, he fears more. I can see the themes of false hope through the way that things did not go as he wanted them to go. I can see the theme of betrayal and anxiety as the persona believed in the lie and gave himself false hope and betrayed himself

    10. My name's Blurryface and I care what you think

The soft and monotonous tone of "my name's" shows the persona's lack of self confidence. Almost as if this line is the persona speaking to his peers and introducing himself, but yet they still fail to even acknowledge his existence through the phrase "Blurryface" signifying that they do not even bother to remember the persona's face. The phrase " I care what you think" shows the persona desperately searching for others validation to feel better about his own insecurities and to have the peace of mind that he is not disliked by his peers. This also shows the theme of teenage anxiety to be able to fit in and to not be the odd one out of everybody and to not be singled out as weird and ostracized. I can see the theme of self doubt and anxiety where teenagers are constantly overthinking and thinking of the worst possible scenario.

    11. Wish we could turn back timeTo the good old daysWhen our mama sang us to sleepBut now we're stressed out (oh)Wish we could turn back time (oh)To the good old days (oh)When our mama sang us to sleepBut now we're stressed out

This final repetition of the segment statement shows the persona sill reminiscing about his past and the comfort and laxness that he feels from being able to live like a child again. Free from his daily pressure and expectations. His escapism. "mama sang us to sleep" shows the parts free of pain and full of comfort and safety, "Wish we could turn back time" shows the persona's wish for a better life and freedom. While "good old days" Suggests the joy and happy emotions he feels when he takes himself back to the days. "Stressed out" contains the persona's bitterness and pain towards his present as he is forced to face it and he does not have the ability to leave.

    12. We used to play pretend, used to play pretend, moneyWe used to play pretend, wake up, you need the moneyUsed to play pretend, used to play pretend, moneyWe used to play pretend, wake up, you need the moneyUsed to play pretend, give each other different names

The repetition of "used to play pretend" shows how the persona is feels that he was forced to mature quite quickly, without him being able to realise that he is no longer able to do the things he used to do when he was a child. Almost as if the persona is saying to himself that "playing pretend" is useless and how he needs to "wake up" just because he "needs money". This shows the persona's inner dialogue and conflict with himself and the voices in his head telling him what to do. One being the part of himself that hates being an adult and wants to go back to be a child and have the time to do whatever whenever. However, the other mature version of himself who is telling him to not listen to that "childish" version of himself. That he needs to be realistic and continuing working himself for the sake of himself and not to dwell on the past but move forward.

    13. Wish we could turn back time (oh)To the good old days (oh)When our mama sang us to sleepBut now we're stressed out

The repetition of this line is to truly cement the persona's own thoughts and feelings of his past. The theme of escapism is truly seen here after the 4th repetition of the line. The persona really, genuinely and truly wants to go back and never come back to his current. This is because the past is filled with good memories while his current is filled with miserable ones. And so his mind links his pain all to his current self which leads to a drop in his self confidence.

    14. My name's Blurryface and I care what you thinkMy name's Blurryface and I care what you thinkWish we could turn back timeTo the good old daysWhen our mama sang us to sleepBut now we're stressed out (oh)

The 3rd repetition of this line gives the effect of the persona going through and telling the listener about his troubles and experiences while growing up. As he constantly jumps between his joyous past and his miserable present. Emphasising that his teenage years were miserable compared to his childhood years. This 3rd repetition is to show how much he misses his younger years.

    15. give each other different names

Depicts that when they were younger they used to like to role play as their favourite characters and immerse themselves and being able to enjoy themselves to the fullest. This shows themes of childhood as they are able to act and play around without any restraints.

    16. Wake up, you need to make money

This line refers to the persona being told by his peers that his dreams of his childhood were unrealistic because it thinks too far in the future. With maturity they realise that they need to deal with current issues. the words "wake up" signify that the persona's peers are trying to tear him away from his ideas of imagination and pull him towards ideas of realism. "make money" shows the human need and want from physical things, such as money, as money is the key to getting those physical items that we pour our affection and time into.

    17. play pretend

the word "play" shows the youth and immaturity of a child, as they are still able to play with one another without getting tired of it nor feel embarrassed by it. This also shows the comparison of free time that children get to what adults get. Children are free to do anything while adults are all cluttered with their schedules packed to the brim with activities. "pretend" shows the child's imagination and fantasy, however this contrasts to adults who seem to lose their ability to use their imagination who use realism instead of imagination

    18. build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far away

The words "build" and "fly" depicts the vastness of a child's imagination and their ability to think of things and being able to full immerse themselves in their fantasies. "far away" conveys their adventurous spirits of wishing to explore our universe and see things not of our world

    19. we all would take the latter

The word "we all" refers to the people like the persona whom are under lots of pressure and suffer from burnout or depression. "would take" refers to the fact that if any of them every had a choice they would pick "the latter" as it would mean that they would finally be free from their chains of studies and expectations all be it with being able to live like a child again

    20. Out of student loans and tree house homes

The assonance of "student loans" and "Tree house homes" shows the two places of which an adolescent and a child would place money into. Where adolescents like the persona are forced to pay money for tuition to help them succeed in life through studies, children are able to spend money on things that would not benefit them in the future but benefit them in the now, being able to choose the option that brings the most joy to themselves. This shows the opposite sides of a coin, where one might not flip to the side of a tree house but eventually and surely enough they will flip to the side of students loans which comes from the money intensive fees that students must pay.

    21. remind us of when nothing really mattered

The sad and lifeless tone of this line shows the present persona narrating his past, and his childhood being nothing more than heaven compared to his now present hell. The words "remind us" conveys the feelings of envy and jealousy the persona feels towards his past and childhood, as if it were something that bites him in the back every time he suffers. The symbolism of " when nothing really mattered" shows the freedom and joy of being able to do anything and everything without having the anxiety to care what people think of you. The diction of "nothing really mattered" shows that the persona's jealousy of his past self's lack of caring. "mattering" shows the immaturity of childhood and youth where their action hardly ever come back as consequences. Word intensity of "really" shows the type of freedom that children have, where adults have "freedom" but its still so very different from children's "freedom" and "really" emphasises this difference,

    22. Same clothes, homegrown, a stone's throw from a creek we used to roam

The phrases "Same clothes" and "from a creek we used to roam" shows that the persona's family used to live in a country side place and can show that they were not very well to do, seen through "same clothes" which depicts that their parents were unable to buy them new clothes. The phrase "homegrown" shows that they have lived their entire childhood within this one place building a sense of familiarity for the persona, which truly links back to the past and his home being the persona's safe place. The idiom of "a stone's throw" depicts that their house was more in to the wilderness and "we used to roam " shows the fun and happiness that the persona and his brother's youthfulness and their ability to play with their surroundings and enjoy themselves to fullest.

    23. probably only sell one

The tone of this phrase is soft and monotonous, this shows how the persona already knows the outcome of his ideas and that it would only matter to people who know the context behind this smell.

    24. Try to sell it, never sell out of it

The repetition of the word sell, shows the part of having to earn money as and adult to build a life for oneself and to be able to live without fear of poverty. the words "out of it" shows that the persona's attempts at trying always ends up in failure. the word "try" shows the persona is always putting himself out there in public hoping that people would be willing to put some faith in him.

This phrase connotes confusion and frustration. The tone depicts that the persona wants to find it because he is able to smell it but is unable to find its origins and thus his thoughts of escapism and exhaustion makes his mind want to keep on reliving the past through the smell. but his inability to find identify it makes him frustrated.

    28. a certain smell

"certain" depicts the persona feeling the nostalgia of familiar things that he remembered through his five senses, like smell. The persona remembers this "smell" as he links good things with the past, which brings up his good memories and brings colour back to his world even if its just for a little bit.

    29. We're stressed out

The louder tone and greater emphasis of "We're" shows the persona's feelings of being done with the pressure and adulthood's problems and troubles. The persona also does this to say to listeners that other adults like him also go through the exam same thing and are struggling. This further shows the persona venting his frustrations through the lyrics. The repetition of "stressed out" reinforces the main point of the song that adolescents and adults are overwhelmed by their problems and anxiety.

    30. But

This shows the opposition between childhood and teenage life, where it used to be fun and carefree but now its restricting and painful. The mood that it sets conveys the lack of passion and colour in their lives. As if it had all been sucked out of them after they entered adulthood making them miserable and depressed.

    31. good old days

Depicting their exhaustion and lack of drive to continue within their day to day lives. "good" and "old" conveys the persona's feelings of thinking that he links good things with the past.

    32. To the good old daysWhen our mama sang us to sleep

There is the usage of Flashback and imagery to show listeners the persona's past of freedom and fun to show the comparison to his past and the present. This makes me feel for the persona as he looks like he is struggling a lot through the many adversities. And how these adversities are slowly wearing the persona down to the point of him wanting to give up

    33. I wish

repetition of the word "I wish" this conveys the writer's inner thoughts of wishful thinking and refusing to face the reality of things. This reflects the personas wish for life to be easier and filled with less hardship. I feel that "I wish" reflects the theme of the persona's escapism of wanting to rid himself of his daily problems of reality.

    34. better voice that sang some better words

The repeat of the word "better" in a single line shows the persona's difficulties as a song writer and a singer, it shows the persona's low self-esteem and how he wishes that he was better at the things he does to make his life feel easier and not full of difficulties. Wanting to escape reality and live in an easier life. I see the theme of resignation and procrastinations as the persona wants make excuses to comfort himself to not improve himself.

    35. good old days

Reminiscing about childhood and about the freedom they once had as children. Carefree about the Judgmental eyes of society and just in pure bliss to enjoy themselves. I can see the theme of youth and how the persona feels that the past to him was so much better than the present and how he wishes to relive the time of fun and wonder.

    36. Blurryface

This word can connote the persona's lack of self esteem to even acknowledge himself. That they do not have their own identity but have an identity that is formed from people's opinions of them. Therefore "Blurry" shows the persona not being clear to himself and everyone.

    37. My name's Blurryface and I care what you think

    38. But now I'm insecure

Sudden change in the persona's tone which shows his lack of confidence. The words "But now I'm insecure" shows a contrast between being a child and being a adolescent, further emphasising the doubts and fears about oneself becoming much more evident to themselves after reaching puberty.

    39. I was told

Tone of frustration and anger as he believed a lie told to him by the people around him. Since he was young and impressionable, the adults deluded him that adulthood was better than childhood but when he reached adulthood he was forced to suddenly realise that his fantasies were fake. This is evident to me that the persona feels betrayed by those lies told to him.
