    1. 'There was a race of men in Africa whose women were bottles. And in every bottle there was a ship. Now the men valued the ships highly, but did not think much of the women themselves. After all, what is a ship in a bottle? Now these bottles were unbreakable. And the men could not break their women to 98 get to the ships .. .

What do you think of that story?. How do you think it's connected to the "House of Hunger''. To be honest I am confused but if I tried to guess I would say something connected to the misogynistic nature of that society and the harsh treatment of black women.

    2. A writer drew a circle in the sand and stepping into it said "This is my novel," but the circle, leaping, cut him clean through,' he said.

This in my opinion is a way of Marechera to say that you are never bigger than the story you are telling. Whatever you achieve in life you came from somewhere and there were people that inspired you doing what you are doing. And if you try convincing yourself that the story is completely yours you will be swallowed by your own misunderstanding.

    3. Nguruwe

Nguruwe was an extinct genus of even-toed ungulates that existed during the Miocene in Africa.

The concept of using totems demonstrated the close relationship between humans, animals and the lived environment. Anthropologists believe that totem use was a universal phenomenon among early societies. Pre-industrial communities had some form of totem that was associated with spirits, religion and success of community members. Early documented forms of totems in Europe can be traced to the Roman Empire, where symbols were used as coats of arms, a practice which continues today.

    4. Aime Cesaire, LeRoi Jones, James Baldwin, Senghor, and a well-thumbed copy of Christopher Okigbo's poems.

All of these are black authors. They are an example of how you can escape the community that you lived in so that you can develop your strengths. They are an inspiration for every black person that wants to escape the toxic community so that he can find a place to express his ideas.

    5. lucky

That sarcastic use of "lucky" refers to the never ending suffering of the people in "House of Hunger". Whatever the do they are part of that hell on earth. No matter how honest and pure their job is, they will end up in ache, because of the time and place they are located in.

    6. Elijah the Prophe

Elijah, also spelled Elias or Elia, Hebrew Eliyyahu, (flourished 9th century bce), Hebrew prophet who ranks with Moses in saving the religion of Yahweh from being corrupted by the nature worship of Baal. Elijah's name means “Yahweh is my God” and is spelled Elias in some versions of the Bible.

    7. At first the three men and the woman merely followed me about the school saying nothing but just being there.

Those are the effects of the pills he was consuming - he said that he consumed a "massive dose" of them. Nobody could stop him from taking them , because people back in the day didn't know the real dangers. Even his psychiatrist doesn't suspect a thing about the danger of those pills. Initially their job was to calm the nerves of the narrator, but now they're the reason for his paranoia and sudden emergence of figures and hearing of voices.

    8. white tranquillisers and pink triangular pills.

"White Tranquillisers'' refer to a drug that is used for calming nerves, alleviate symptoms of stress, or assist with sleep. They were first tested on animals during the 50s of the 20th century so we can conclude that in the time and place of the text their effects weren't known very well by their users and they didn't know about the long term affects that they can have - memory loss, addiction and even death. People probably used them like in today's times because pills gave them a sense of high. "Pink Triangular Pills" refer to pills that are used for treatment of cluster headaches; migraine and belongs to the drug class antimigraine agents.

    9. 'All you did was starve yourself to send this shit to school while Smith made sure that the kind of education he got was exactly what has made him like this.'

Those words of Peter tell us a direct opinion on the government of that time and place. They are living in some kind of totalitarian regime in which education doesn't serve its purpose. It is just a tool to keep people from questioning the way that the country is working - just like during the socialistic years of the USSR and the censorship of western books and literature - things written in those books were could have information that goes against the ideology and principles of the country, which makes it harder to assert control.

    10. Her face was long and haggard, scarred by the many sacrifices she had taken on our behalf

Even in place like that where any structure of a society is absent - we can see that the narrator has some kind of family structure. There is a family that is standing behind your back - his mother clearly loves him very much, because of the "sacrifices that she made on their behalf". Normal things that every parent would do for their child.

    11. All the black youth was thirsty.

That's another meaning of the title "House of Hunger''. The new generation wanted to know about the world - wanted to see a change in their lives. They acknowledge the fact that they are part of a broken society that needs drastic changes so that it can prosper and so that people can have normal lives.

    12. It was my cat. It was dead. The fur was not only spattered with blood but also half-burnt, as though our neighbour's children had even tried to burn it before flinging it through the window.

From that we can make a conclusion of the environment the narrator is living in. It is a chaotic place with no real rules or limits. From the absence of a reaction that a person like me or you would have, we can conclude that things have been like that for a very long time. It's just one broken community that it is not functioning at all.
