Tonight the moon is very bright.I have not seen it for over thirty years, so today when I saw it I felt in unusually high spirits. I begin to realize that during the past thirty-odd years I have been in the dark; but now I must be extremely careful. Otherwise why should that dog at the Chao house have looked at me twice?I have reason for my fear.
In this part, the narrator is reading a part of the diary: "the moon is very bright". In the Chinese culture, the moon means brightness and harmony and luck etc… We can think that the former ill friend was suspecting something in the facility in which he was detained. We already know that the story was published during the Boxer evolution which means that the life of foreigners were threatened by the government as well as the population. Perhaps that sick friend were a Chinese citizen who did not agree with the government and were therefore kept in a rehabilitation facility by the Chinese government until he decided to change his mind like we can see right now with the Uyghurs.
