West Briton
'West Britain' is not a good word obviously in Ireland. But it can suggest that Gabriel is a young man with advanced idea and is tired of the rigid regulation in society of Ireland.
Gabriel says everyone wears them on the Continent.”
At that time, European continent developed much better than Ireland in industry. The young Irish liked the new product, new technology, while the elderly didn't. There exist a contrast.
But no one tried to show her her mistake; and when she had ended her song Joe was very much moved.
Everyone in house is so superstitious that they believe Maria will die. Especially Joe, he loves her so much, consequently, he can't hold black his tears.
he had boasted of his free-thinking and denied the existence of God to his companions in public-houses. But that was all passed and done with… nearly. He still bought a copy of Reynolds’s Newspaper every week but he attended to his religious duties and for nine-tenths of the year lived a regular life
Mr.Doran is such a contradictory person. He desired to be a man with modern conception, but still afraid of other's criticism. That just result in his final unwilling decision.
The notes of the air sounded deep and full.
The music can suggest the environment. 'Deep' can express the Lenehan's disappointment to his single life. 'Full' can represent the Corey's complacent emotion.
Daybreak, gentlemen!
They are so excited and enjoy have fun with each other, so that they even fail to sense the time flowing. It's quite a nice friendship between them. Their youthful spirit is impressive for everyone to reflect on their young age.
He was drawing her into them: he would drown her.
If she went back, the life would be quite hard for her. But if she went abroad with Frank, her fortunate would be in the charge of Frank, It's sad that she can't seize her fortunate.
The upper part of the hall was now completely dark
The 'upper part' is not only the dark ceil, but also something invisible in people's heart. It's not a fault for the young boy to please his favorite girl, but some rigid dogma still remains to limit people to express their love.
He seemed to have forgotten his recent liberalism.
The man is a very contradictory person, it's really hard to understand what the author's intention to set such a character.... Maybe he can represent social attitude to humanity.
It was that chalice he broke…. That was the beginning of it
They tend to explain everything into god's intention. It's quite ironic that James thought it as something like god's warning, and become depressed since then.
the little squat railway engine, all seemed carved out of solid darkness
The author creates a very quiet and dark environment, even the little sound of engine can be so distinct here. 'Carve' is such a appropriate word to express its distinction. It just stir up your interest to continue the reading.
fishing
'Fishing' is quite an interesting words to express the searching movement, and can suggest the relaxed mood of William.
... Oh dear, I sometimes think... whatever should I do if anything were to... But, there, thinking’s no good to any one—is it, madam? Thinking won’t help. Not that I do it often. And if ever I do I pull myself up sharp, “Now, then, Ellen. At it again—you silly girl! If you can’t find anything better to do than to start thinking!... “
The maid is still expecting her love, but it contradicts with her identity as a maid. The rigid idea has anchored deeply in her heart so that she consider keeping single as the loyal to her master.
And somewhere at the back of everything he was watching a little withered ancient man climbing up endless flights of stairs. Who was he?
It's Mr.Neave who supports the 'ideal' family, while he finds himself just working hard to satisfying others' extravagance. In the family, nobody cares his idea, so he is very disappointed and worried about that future of the family.
THE STRANGER
It's a very interesting and perfect title. The late arrival of the ship, the suspect of Mr.Hammond to her wife, the plot is changed by the stranger, but he has been dead from the beginning.
“long before that you’ll be sitting up there on the stage, looking on, in your nice black velvet. And these pretty arms will have turned into little short fat ones, and you’ll beat time with such a different kind of fan—a black bony one.” The fat man seemed to shudder. “And you’ll smile away like the poor old dears up there, and point to your daughter, and tell the elderly lady next to you how some dreadful man tried to kiss her at the club ball. And your heart will ache, ache”
As the girl grows into a woman, rich and elegant though she is, she loses her chance to show her beauty. In the cause of the regulation of that society, the married woman must play a dignified role.
Wasn’t there anywhere in the world where she could have her cry out—at last?
In that period, Ma Parker is a typical lower-class feature. 'No where to cry' means, though leading a hard life, there were few chances for her to make her fortune better.
As she said those words she suddenly let fall her brush. She found herself in the kitchen.
Ma Parker is immersed in the sadness, so that she is unconscious of what she is doing in her hand. The author's description is very close to the reality.
“Let’s make up a basket. Let’s send that poor creature some of this perfectly good food.
It is not their regret but their attempt to pretend to care the life of the poor. They never ask what poor men need, and just send their leftover to them.
“Stop everything, Laura!” cried Jose in astonishment. “What do you mean?”
The lower-class people's life is not more important than a party in the mind of upper-class people, which is so ironic. It suggests that the upper-class people is so selfish that they never care about life of the poor.
“Roo-coo-coo-coo! Roo-coo-coo-coo!”
The sound of doves appears from time to time during their talk. The doves are free, without their complicate reality to face, but human is different.
For he was bound to find out sooner or later
The reality is absolutely hard to accept. The girls still expect their father to stand up and help them make the decision. These words are heartbreaking.
There, raised high on a throne–seated on his typical antelope, with his four arms stretching towards the four corners of the earth–there, soared above us, dark and awful in the mystic light of heaven, the god of the Moon. And there, in the forehead of the deity, gleamed the yellow Diamond, whose splendour had last shone on me in England, from the bosom of a woman’s dress!
Finally, it seems like some supernature power commanding the world. The missing diamond goes back to its god's throne. The diamond get returned, people who desired to possess it died, and other people lead their former life as before. Maybe, it's a temporary punishment for the incorrect possession.
When the morning came, your language and conduct showed that you were absolutely ignorant of what you had said and done overnight. At the same time, Miss Verinder’s language and conduct showed that she was resolved to say nothing (in mercy to you) on her side. If Mr. Godfrey Ablewhite chose to keep the Diamond, he might do so with perfect impunity. The Moonstone stood between him and ruin. He put the Moonstone into his pocket.
The mystery has been solved finally, but the ending is not so detective, so that the novel ending is not very attractive. And I also wondered why the author didn't write down enough details to point to Godfrey in the diamond missing night.
GODFREY ABLEWHITE!
That's very out of expectation, for Godfrey is less probably to steal the diamond from the former plot. The novel has gotten the suprising ending successfully.
At another, the one beloved face which I shall never see again, rose at my bedside, hideously phosphorescent in the black darkness, and glared and grinned at me.
The face he'll never see again and 'Rose‘ is probably referred to the dead Rosanna. Jennings is very regretful to have caused Rosanna to death indeliberately. So, her face appears in his mind from time to time.
I found the mark, and read–MY OWN NAME.
After the moonstone stolen, the plot has reached another summit, which makes you quite excited.
“Will you forgive an old friend and servant of your family, Miss Rachel, if I venture on asking whether your heart is set on this marriage?”
Mr.Bruff is not only an acute but also an honest guy. He loves Miss Rachel, and try to inform her regardless of his status after sensing Godfrey's unusual attempt.
nothing but a life-interest in the property
A big change has appeared to Godfery's figure. And the main reason why he broke up with Rachel is just the less-paid Will.It suggests that Lady Verinder is such a clever and shrewd person.
I judge nobody, sir, and I offer no opinion
In my opinion, she might suspect Rachel and Godfrey, but in the case that Christian can't judge others.
I am indebted to my dear parents (both now in heaven) for having had habits of order and regularity instilled into me at a very early age.
Miss Clack must be a serious Christian, 'both now in heaven' ,'habits of order and regularity' just gives the evidence. And this identity also helps us understand her idea to the cases.
I am an average good Christian
There exists a contradiction between his Chirstian identity and his faith in ROBINSON CRUSOE. Christian follows the God's arrangement, while Robinson resist on his own. Maybe Betteredge just said this in case that he would be thought as heresy in that society.
vehemently
Veil is very soft while Miss Rachel pulled down it vehemently, which indicates her anxiety and really bad mood.
The Last Rose of Summer
The word 'Rose' looks like 'Rosanna'. Rose can hurt people but is beautiful and balmy as well. Just like Rose, Rosanna's characteristic may be a little difficult to get along with, but she is really a kind girl.
She offered the money to the Sergeant, looking mighty loth to part with it all the while. “Might I ask you to give this back to Rosanna, with my love and respects?” says Mrs. Yolland. “She insisted on paying me for the one or two things she took a fancy to this evening
Judging from the Miss Yolland's impression to Rosanna, Rosanna seems to be a very kind girl. It's very probable that she is compelled by something.
Indian
After sensing the Indians' plan, everyone tend to be serious. However, 'put the diamond into an Indian cabinet' has added the mystery for diamond missing.
I noticed that the sky was clouding over fast, as I followed them to the house. Mr. Murthwaite noticed it too. He looked round at me, in his dry, droning way, and said: “The Indians will want their umbrellas, Mr. Betteredge, to-night!”
The background weather firmly push you into the plot. As the cloud gathers, you can sense that something unusual may happen. What's more? 'The umbrellas to the Indians' has shown us how important the diomand are for them!
What do you think, for instance, of his discussing the lengths to which a married woman might let her admiration go for a man who was not her husband, and putting it in his clear-headed witty French way to the maiden aunt of the Vicar of Frizinghall?
After Godfrey's being refused by Rachel, Franklin behave completely differently at the party. We can judge from his that he has picked up his confidence for pursuing Rachel again.
Whether he had been trying to make love to his cousin again, and had got a rebuff–or whether his broken rest, night after night, was aggravating the queer contradictions and uncertainties in his character–I don’t know.
The change of Mr.Franklin motivate the development of the plot, and the gradual transformation in Franklin finally become a turning point.
June twenty-first, the day of the birthday, was cloudy and unsettled at sunrise, but towards noon it cleared up bravely.
It implies that the leading character's plan is just like the weather, something good will happen.
If you are bald, you will understand how she sacrificed me. If you are not, skip this bit, and thank God you have got something in the way of a defence between your hair-brush and your head.
The author with very humorous tune showed Penelope's excited mood. When reading this paragraph, maybe the bald can't help massaging his head.
