      The Content > The Award

    2. meaningful

I think the word meaningful is very important in this sentence because it can not just be any task. It must be impactful, useful, and important!

    3. Some say that giving out rewards for doing work creates the wrong type of motivation, whereby students become more focused on the treats and prizes than on the learning.

The saying, "you can't reward a fish for swimming" would apply here.

    4. Students invest time in and outside the classroom to complete the challenges, such as doing extra readings, video viewings, and practice activities.

The students in my classroom now use gamification for their reading logs! While they don't get a physical award for completing it each month they get the internal award!

    1. Developing self-awareness is critical for students’ being aware of their skills and interests and for understanding where they are in the learning process

Not only in the academic world but also for their future endeavors as well. Self-awareness is one of the essential building blocks for a valuable member of society.

    1. It’s easy to forget that tone isn’t just conveyed through your voice—it can also be conveyed by facial expressions, hand gestures, and body language, which “help guide facilitation of student learning,” says Samford University professor Lisa Gurley in a 2018 study.

I am still trying perfect my official teacher look to re-direct my students to what they should be doing.

    2. When teachers convey warmth and express interest in a topic, students are more likely to stay engaged—and stay out of trouble.

I agree with this because I've seen it first hand. I always make sure to use warmth and expression when my students talk to me about things they are interested in. As a result I find that they are frequently come to me with problems or admit fault if something goes wrong because I've fostered this kind of relationship beginning with my tone.

    1. Depth of Knowledge gives you a framework and common language to make that happen in your classroom.

While the DoK is very transferable in a tradition classroom, I'd be interested in seeing how this would apply in a classroom such as a special needs classroom or something of that manner.

    2. DOK levels are not sequential. Students need not fully master content with Level 1 tasks before doing Level 2 tasks. In fact, giving students an intriguing Level 3 task can provide context and motivation for engaging in the more routine learning at Levels 1 and 2.

This makes complete sense to me. Very few things in life are clear cut and I am not surprised DoK levels aren't one of them. There is a degree of intersection of all things similar.

    3. 5. Rewrite a Level 1 or Level 2 task to be at least Level 3.

I really like the idea of returning to the drawing board as the last step because I feel like it hold the teacher accountable for the work they are asking their students to do. Revising and assessing your list in turn makes your students time at school more worthwhile.

    4. Level 2. Skills and Concepts:

This level of cognitive depth and those following remind me of 21s Century Knowledge, Skills and Dispositions mentioned in the textbook. Learning for students doesn't nor should it stop at performing a task, but have further importance that is transferable in their future endeavors.
