After the authors mother found out, she punished her by making her wash her mouth with ivory soap. This is somewhat contradictory; the girl is lying about being part black by telling white lies. The mother makes her "wash out" the lies with ivory soap which is like white. so she is washing away the "white" lies with "white" soap...
