    1. he word skyrocketed in usage starting in the second half of the 20th century

I think that this fact is very interesting and in my opinion, very promising. I think it is great for people to work on themselves and find their own identities by exploring concepts and learning new things. In the past, people have just followed tradition and what their families taught them rather than what they actually believe in and think.

    2. “It used to be that people were born as part of a community, and had to find their place as individuals. Now people are born as individuals, and have to find their community.”

It's crazy to think of how much the times have changed and how much humanity has grown. I understand how some people could think of this as bad, but to me, I think it is great that people can choose their own communities. Just because you were born into a certain "community" does not mean that you have the same ideals or beliefs as the people around you, and you shouldn't have to change yourself to fit in.

    1. Your insiders are not monolithic

I think this statement is extremely important to remember because if people always think about other people as just one thing, it can cause stereotypes and discrimination. Just because someone is a part of a community does not mean that they are solely defined by that community or even that that community is only defined by that one thing that brought the members together.

    2. So how do you get to a tighter definition of “community?”

I think that the definition of community is different for everyone and that trying to put one strict or tight definition onto it is impossible. Everyone goes through different experiences, especially relating to their "communities," so everyone's outlook or feelings about the word is different. It's also hard to define community because it can mean different things in different contexts and situations.

    1. As opposed to a regular discussion board, it allows us to connect our conversations directly to the text--and to branch off and reply to the ideas that are most interesting to each of us.

I'm really intrigued by this platform. I think it's a great way to make reading more interesting and to get everyone involved. Usually when I read, I have thoughts about certain things but then forget them by the end. This platform allows me to not only share my ideas as I have them, but also allows me to read others' ideas when they had them.

    2. Each week will follow the same routine. This will help us all to anticipate and plan the time that we spend working on this course.

I really appreciate this structure. This semester is already super overwhelming and confusing and having a structured routine each week, at least for this class, is really going to help.
