    1. When we think about what that means in education—that design shapes students' ability to access, participate in, and contribute to meaningful, transformative learning—we are reminded how seriously we should be taking the concept of design in education.

This is definitely very important and teachers should be prioritizing making sure the education given is inclusive to everyone. All students don't learn the same way, there are numerous different ways to learn and ensuring options are available to students when learning is essential to education because it determines what students take away after being in the classroom. Students are more likely to take away more information when leaving class if they are learning in a way directed towards their learning abilities.

    1. UDL is a framework for designing learning experiences so students have options for how they learn, what materials they use, and how they demonstrate their learning. When implemented with a lens of equity, the framework has the potential to eliminate opportunity gaps that exclude many learners, especially those who have been historically marginalized. If we want all students to have equal opportunities to learn, we have to be incredibly purposeful, proactive, and flexible. UDL creates a learning environment that is the least restrictive and most culturally responsive, trauma-informed environment for all students.

The Universal Design for Learning is a greta framework for teachers to utilize in their classrooms and a way for them to transform their classroom environment into a place where everyone feels comfortable and excited to learn. The framework emphasizing how many students learn differently and there should be an option for students to choose the way they learn best for example offering a written test, essay, or project option for assignments so students can choose which they feel would allow them to showcase their learning the most. The framework allows for all learners to be able to learn in a school environment.

    1. The TPACK framework emphasizes the importance of using your pedagogical expertise and content knowledge to evaluate and select digital tools and apps that will be the most appropriate for student learning. For example, you would not teach multiplication facts the same way you would teach geographic literacy. The same goes for using technology when teaching. Certain tools and apps are more suited for specific pedagogical approaches and subjects than others, like how having students use Canva to make a brochure about a particular country to develop their geographic knowledge is a more effective use of the tool than asking students to use Canva to memorize multiplication facts.

This was interesting to read about as I have never heard of the TPACK model before. This is a great model for educators to use when planning out lessons and I will be holding onto it for my future career as a teacher. Incorporating technology into lesson plans is not a vital thing for teachers as technology is so widely used in classrooms and just in everyday life now.

    1. According to Vygotsky (1978), learning happens on two planes: (1) between people and (2) in one’s own mind. That is, we learn by observing others’ actions and by interacting with others who offer more knowledge or diverse perspectives and ideas. Then, we internalize these social experiences to reflect upon, develop, or modify our own knowledge.

This is a topic I learned a lot about in my human development course and I find very interesting. I definitely agree with Vygotsky's theory of learning as I find you always learn best through experience. For example in this class we oftentimes go and explore different educational tools online and I find that by doing this I am able to better understand how the tools work as opposed to just reading a slide on how they work.

    1. Maine passed a law that protects users’ personal information. In a broadband context, this includes what websites you browse, what apps you have installed on your phone and how you use them, and your GPS location. The Maine law says that your ISP can use that to implement your internet service, but if the ISP wants to use this information for a reason other than providing the service, then they need to give you a choice. The default is that the ISP can’t use it unless you tell them that they can, so it’s an opt-in choice.

This was interesting to read as I did not know Maine passed a law that protects users personal information but I think it is a great thing. More states should pass always that protect our personal information because there is so much information that can be collected about someone through the information on their phones and it is scary to think about it. Pretty much every app you have installed on your phone has access to all of your data and is using it which is crazy. Up until we talked about it in this class I never realized just how much information on my phone is being tracked by companies and how many people have ahold of all my data and it is scary to think about it. Creating laws that help protect our personal information is great that way you have the choice of giving out your date or not.

    1. Individuals who use technological devices to make life easier are likely engaging with artificial intelligence (AI), which has computers performing tasks that traditionally required human intelligence

I think a lot of people don't realize this when they are using the internet. Technology has been around for so long but as evolved in so many ways over the years and artificial intelligence is one of these involvements. Artificial intelligence can be viewed as scary in a lot of ways with the fear that overtime these computer performing tasks will take over peoples jobs. It is great to see the internet and technology evolving so much and so many improvements and changes have occurred but it is also scary in a way.

    1. Sharing a screenshot of your 4th grade class Zoom session (featuring student names and images) on Twitter is a FERPA violation because you are sharing an educational record without students' or parents/guardians' permission.

I feel like a lot of people don't know or understand this concept. I feel like I see teachers share there students faces and names on social media all the time and I always wonder whether they are getting permission to do that or not. A lot of parents don't want their children's faces out their in the online world so for a teacher to feel they have the right to share their faces online without getting permission isn't right.

    1. Why a Rubric?

I think the use of a rubrics in general is always useful and found myself using one anytime I was given one in class to help organize my thoughts and ideas. using a rubric for testing the accessibility of a tool would do the same thing. It allows you to dive deeper into a digital tool see if it fits the criteria it should be or what about it could be improved so it better fits that criteria.

    1. High-quality design is an essential part of a successful online or hybrid learning program.

I definitely agree that covid caused teachers to make a quick transition into vastly engaging in teaching with technology as opposed to in a classroom setting. Because of this they might not be all too familiar with how it should be used and why certain things like usability is so important when it comes to online learning. This article is a great outline going into the details of usability and it's importance and by reading it allows you to gain a better understanding of it. It explains the five components of usability which are learnability, efficiency, memorability, errors, and satisfaction. I personally wasn't too familiar with these five components but by further reading was able to gain knowledge on them. This is a great source especially if there are teachers out there who find themselves still struggling with the use of online teaching.

    1. The official UN definition for disability is the following:"The term persons with disabilities is used to apply to all persons with disabilities including those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various attitudinal and environmental barriers, hinders their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others." – UN, Secretariat for the Convention on the Rights of Persons FAQ, 2007

I really liked this definition of disability as it says "used to apply to all persons with disabilities" and goes on to list a wide range of disabilities people have and are affected by. This definition of disability is well though out and detailed and by reading it, it allows people to better understand what a disability is.

    1. However, when you start the video in class, most students cannot hear it because the audio is too low and the volume of the computer speakers cannot be increased. And you find out that the closed captions in the video are inaccurate. Only the students closest to the computer speakers and those with exceptional hearing capabilities are able to benefit from the video, leaving most of the class feeling more lost than they were before.

I experienced this a lot growing up. Teachers would always have many complications when trying to lay a video for the class. Either they couldn't get their computer to project onto the screen, the volume wouldn't turn on, or they couldn't figure out how to change the volume. Often times it would take them the rest of the class to try and figure it out and it would never work. Because of this we would loose out on a lot of class time due to technology complications. I think it is important for teachers to learn howe to teach through digital tools and apps and get more experience with it so these problems don't occur.

    2. When a tool provides good instruction, students are more willing to use the tool and more confident when they use it. This means students will spend their time on learning content knowledge and skills rather than learning the tool itself.

I definitely agree with this line as I find when a tool as a tutorial on how to use it I always find it very helpful. I know some people just skip through tutorials but I always carefully read each step to ensure I am understanding how to use it properly. Sometimes it can be overwhelming to start using a new tool and when a tool has good instruction and steps on how to use it the process becomes much easier.

    1. For many teachers the reality has been that what occurs in their classroom has been both private and isolating, a matter between the teacher and his or her students but a task largely tackled alone. But this isolationist view is, in the age of the social media and networking increasingly challenged and more and more teachers are finding their voice, sharing their ideas and gaining valuable insights from a global community of connected educators.

I think these line are very powerful and it is important to note that teachers should feel private and isolated abut what is going on in their classrooms. being a teacher is a very difficult job especially if you are doin git all alone and don't people to talk to and bounce ideas off of. By creating a PLN it gives you so many different resources to help make your teaching experience easier and less stressful for you. It is great to read how more and more teachers are finding their voice and not staying isolated. connecting with other educators around the world is so important because it helps you feel less alone. There are other people out their doing the same thing you are and being able to talk and engage with other educators makes the process easier.

    1. If you have a learning objective or classroom challenge (e.g., my students are struggling with math fractions) in mind, you can use an Internet search engine, such as Google, Yahoo!, Bing, or DuckDuckGo, to see if you can find a tool or app to meet your teaching needs.

This whole section was a great refresher to read as I feel like I am constantly searching things on google but sometimes struggle knowing the right things to write into the search engine. this section gives great descriptions of what you should type into the search engine depending on what your are trying to search for/what results you are looking for.

    1. Social growth includes an increased sense of connectedness with others, reduced feelings of isolation, and exposure to diverse people and communities.

This line stuck out to me while reading the piece as I would agree social growth is an important part of a classroom environment. I personally feel inclusion is one of the most important factors of a classroom as no one should ever feel left out or that they don't belong. The purpose of a classroom is for it to be a safe space for all students and everybody should feel connected in one way or another

    1. Vygotsky contended that thinking has social origins, social interactions play a critical role especially in the development of higher order thinking skills, and cognitive development cannot be fully understood without considering the social and historical context within which it is embedded.

I remember learning about Vygotsky's and his ideas in the human development class I took last year. Interacting with other people and experiencing things in the real world definitely play a critical role in your development especially as a young child. When you interact with other people you are essentially bouncing different thoughts off one another and it can allow you to think about things in a way you never have before. Cognitive development refers to the development of your ability to think in reason so it makes sense that social interactions would play a big part in that.

    1. Similarly, scholars have found that promoting autonomy and self-directed activity can substantially improve student morale, motivation, learning, and performance

I definitely agree with this line, autonomy and self-directed activities make students more apt to want to engage and learn something. In high school I took a fiction and writing English class and one of our lessons was called a "choice unit". We each got to pick whatever book we wanted, read it, and then choose a creative way to present the information about the book to the class. It was my favorite unit because I was able to pick a book I was interested in to read so I enjoyed it more. I also liked the freedom of being able to present the information in whatever way I felt most comfortable with. I was extremely motivated and worked hard on the assignment so I relate a lot to this line.

    1. Individuals who use technological devices to make life easier are likely engaging with artificial intelligence (AI), which has computers performing tasks that traditionally required human intelligence

This line stood out to be as I began reading this article because it is an interesting concept to think about. Technology has evolved so much over the years and is becoming more and more apart of our daily lives and tasks. It's strange to think that technology is so advanced now it is able to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence. This uptake in technology and AI is so fast paced and it is scary think about what the future will look like as technology keeps progressing.

    1. Research has shown that images are more powerful and memorable than text

I definitely agree that when I'm looking at an article for example and one is full of pictures and the other is just one big paragraph I am more apt to want to look at the article with the images. Images make information look more appealing and it engages you to want to learn further. If you have a website with just a bunch of text adding a picture helps make the website look visually more appealing and people will want to check it out.

    1. In a real collaborative environment someone brings the seed, another the sun, another the soil, another the water.Teams need to learn how to work together and talk to one another. This is the hardest part. It involves real listening.

I really like the way this sentence is written. It really is so important for everybody in a group to actively contribute and share ideas. Everybody has different information and thoughts in their brains and by giving your input you could be helping somebody else learn something they didn't know before. It is so important to have an open conversation where everybody is shouting out their thoughts and ideas because it takes all people in a group for true collaboration to take place. You need to be open to listening to what other people have to say and their opinion on things. You never know, their opinion and reasoning could change your perspective on something so listening is truly so important.

    1. “Experience has long been considered the best teacher of knowledge. Since we cannot experience everything, other people’s experiences, and hence other people, become the surrogate for knowledge. ‘I store my knowledge in my friends’ is an axiom for collecting knowledge through collecting people (undated).”

I found this quote to be one of the most important ones throughout this reading because I find it to be very true. We learn so much through the experiences we go through. When you go through experiences your whole body is feeling and acknowledging what you are going through. Your brain isn't just looking at a textbook reading something; it is doing, seeing, and exploring things. By utilizing all of your five senses through experience you are getting a kind of knowledge you are incapable of receiving while sitting in a classroom. We are taught through experiences and then those experiences became the building blocks for other peoples learning and it is a continuous cycle.

    1. Modern technologies, and web technologies in particular, provide us with access to a variety of information and media resources, and the lay internet user today has access to more knowledge than the wealthiest, most-educated researchers that lived just a few decades back.

I had to reread this line because of how eye opening it truly was. We take for granted the amount of free access we have to the internet at this day and age. Even if you aren't wealthy enough to afford your own phones, computers, etc you can visit your local library, hop on a computer, and be given free access to the whole internet. It is really crazy to think how far we have come with technology. You can go on to google and search up anything your mind can think of and over 100 websites full of information will pop up. The internet is simply one giant learning tool.

    1. Other researchers were interested in whether some of the properties of television were damaging to young children, and they were reluctant to implement it in educational settings. However, Anderson et al. (1977) claimed in their work that there was no evidence that television was harmful to the attention spans of little children.

I believe that there is a lot of benefits to watching TV and that you're actually learning a lot more than you think, it definitely has more pros than cons. You don't realize the amount of knowledgable information you are retaining while watching a TV. Also every kid learns differently, so implementing a TV in classrooms and watching documentaries and educational videos could be very helpful to kids who learn better with visuals. It allows for a new and different way of learning and personally for me when my teachers played videos in my classes it always helped me retain the information better.
