    1. As the sentence progresses, some of its demands are satisfied, others deferred, others complicated, and meanwhile new ones arc created.

I think this is the hard part of grammar and writing. A sentence can be complete yet complicated at the same time. The structure of a sentence adds more dimension to it and the way a writer develops their thoughts can change mid-sentence. As thoughts change so does the structure of a sentence. One moment you have a basic sentence with a subject and predicate that turns to a complex one with multiple clauses as words are added. This is the beauty of writing.

    1. The wheelbarrow, the lawnmower, t

This is an extremely long sentence. In comparing the two readings Hemingway in comparison to Woolf uses shorter sentences. Hemingway does speak in the passive a lot and uses past participle phrases. He "was" and old man, the old man "was" thin. The boy's parents "had told him". All of these are in the passive.

Woolf's reading is just three extremely long sentences. This reading is much harder to follow for me with the way the sentences are written. There are several commas that could have been sentences but it is obvious that Woolf does this purposely because it happens throughout the entire reading. The first sentence also includes several gerunds .

    1. Shimmering beautifu

Shimmering beautiful could be deleted from the song and it would make more sense to me than it does being included. Shimmering is an adjective , and beautiful is also an adjective ? I wonder if this was done purposely or if maybe I'm identifying the words wrong.

    2. E

From first glance we can tell that the two songs are completely different based strictly on their format. Metallic is not separated by verse or chorus , while Mirrorball has all of the components for the song laid out and labeled. This could be because of the way the website copied the songs or could have been purposely done. Mirrorball's layout makes it easier to break down the individual sentences in the song.

    1. African-American acknowledges that. Any term that emphasizes the color and not theheritage separates us from our heritage

This entire article is very interesting. I think that I stand in the middle. I feel that people should be able to capitalize the 'B' in black if they want to. It's so hard to enforce grammar rules on to people, especially considering the fact that not everyone will agree to this rule. People will want to know if every race should now be capitalized. I see the world "black" being capitalized now more than ever and it may just be due to the climate that we are living in.

    1. till sounds jangly to my ears. I will get used to it.

All things take some getting used to. It wasn't until my freshman year at Clemson that I started including and being introduced to calling peers by their specific pronouns. That took some getting used to, but now it comes naturally to be introduced to someone and included as well as ask for pronouns. The "they" pronoun did take some time for me to adjust to. I can recall when Sam Smith announced that they wanted to be called by the pronoun. It is hard for me to understand the use of they in the singular.

    1. last comma in the first sentence was the crux of the matter: “packing forshipment or distribution of.” The court ruled that it was not clear whether the law exempted thedistribution of the three categories that followed, or if it exempted packing for the shipment ordistribution of them

I can't wrap my head around a simple comma costing a company 5 million dollars. This just emphasizes how important grammar is. Either way I feel like you should be paid for any extra hours you work. I don't really see the reason for the exemptions. I also think this article shows the importance for people like technical writers, this issue could have been resolved if someone had paid a little more attention.

    2. the often-skipped second comma in a series like “A, B, and C”

I feel like this rule has changed. In elementary school I remember teachers saying that there did not need to be a comma after B. I feel like the rules of grammar have slightly changed or are taught differently by different people.

    1. Not necessarily. Infact, once we can see past rules as theonlyframework in which we mightunderstand and learn to use language, we can begin to see what purposerules mightreallyserve.

In terms of grammar this makes perfect sense. Once we understand that the rules are their to set up a foundation for us it is easier to understand the need for them. I always felt like writing should be something that comes natural, but you can't go on writing forever without understanding the use and importance of punctuation. Although, I will admit that the rules of punctuation are not the easiest to remember, I do realize the need for them.

    2. raise some critical questions about our attitudes towards rules, andconsider how those attitudes influence our approach to punctuation andour passions about semicolons.

I think having rules in place make our attitudes change because now you have to think twice before using a comma or a semicolon.
