I feel like many people use complicated vocabulary on purpose in order to make their thoughts seem more complex or to showcase their knowledge of such words but I think it is more impressive to deliver complex ideas in an easy manner. While the ideas maybe complex, the words that deliver these ideas don't need to be and I think her mother understanding her work perfectly emphasized that idea.

I have also felt as though such tests based on analogies are more dependent on how ingrained you are to the western psyche than your ability to deal with logic. For example, in my culture, the jungle is associated with trash in the sense that you would tell someone to throw something away by telling them to "throw it in the jungle." Similarly, as such associations would not be considered by people that grew up in America, people growing up in different countries would not make other associations here.

I feel like this encapsulates the immigrant experience in which immigrants who still show characteristics of their previous culture (including language barriers but also including clothes and culture) are treated with less respect as a whole. But once someone who seems to be much more proficient in English talks, there seems to be a whole shift in attitude, almost so they won't get in trouble for mistreatment. Overall, it shows an epistemological shift is necessary in society in treating people kindly regardless of their ability to communicate in English.

I also have had this experience as my mother's first language is not English and was always confused when cashiers or other people who speak English with a native proficiency had trouble understanding her. To some extent, I even thought about how this could be just discrimination but didn't understand how it could cause some confusion until conversing with immigrants who speak English in a different manner. While I did my best to understand them and ultimately succeeded in communication, I realized that not completely understanding a different dialect isn't harmful as long as prejudices are kept out of the way.
